The USGS Science Analytics and Synthesis Center is seeking high school, associate, undergraduate, graduate level student working towards a degree in Information Technology to gain practical experience in Information Technology

As a Student Trainee (IT support) you will serve in a trainee capacity, performing routine and recurring development assignments to acquire knowledge and understanding of functions, principles, practices, and methods used in the area of Communication, information technology, Computer systems.

Duties include:

  • Assists in the installation of new and revised commercial off-the-shelf software packages. Aids staff in using various computer equipment and software.
  • Assists with the configuration of personal workstations to interface with existing LAN and mainframe servers.
  • Modifies software scripts. Performs routine updates of various server applications. Runs security patches on Windows servers.
  • Serves as backup support for the database and server administrator. Creates network maps, updates documentation, create schematics of system infrastructure
  • Uses reporting software such as Jira and Cloudchecker.
  • Provides assistance and support for assignments and projects relative to the delivery of customer support services.
  • Performs routine and recurring assignments in identifying and resolving recurring and routine issues and problems as they arise. IN addition to the GS - 5 duties this candidate will performs the following major duties associated with this work:
  • Diagnoses and resolves recurring technical problems in response to customer reported incidents; and reports, responds to, and resolves customer requests. Updates and maintains problem tracking/ticketing systems to track and identify customer needs, as well as to discuss requirements with the customer to resolve the customers technical need s .
  • Installs, configures, and tests software on customer workstations; and installs, configures, upgrades, and troubleshoots hardware and software components on system servers .
  • Assists teams responsible for planning and delivering a full range of customer IT support services to the organization. Participates in evaluating effectiveness of customer support services and provides feedback on impacts of proposed IT initiatives to services.
  • Presents formal and informal training, guidance, and assistance to IT customers. Provides routine advice and guidance to customers requesting information on established policy or procedures, including those related to information security/information assurance.
  • Participates in internal staff meetings, sharing information obtained through research of tracking/ticketing systems, presenting alternatives and recommendations for improving IT customer service delivery, and assisting higher graded specialists in preparing for such meetings or data calls.
  • Provides routine advice and guidance to IT customers requesting information on established policy or procedures, including those related to information security
Physical Demands/Work Environment: The work is primarily sedentary; however, some work may require walking and standing in conjunction with customer site visits, travel, and attendance at meetings and conferences away from the work site. The work may also involve carrying light item, such as papers, books, or small parts; lifting, with assistance, various pieces of IT equipment such as computers, components, and printers; or driving a motor vehicle. The work does not require special physical effort. Work is typically performed in an office setting where typical risks and discomforts that require normal safety precautions occur; however, some work may occur in research facilities or industrial and/or maintenance areas that may require the use of hardhats, hearing protection, or other protective equipment.

There are a few vacancies that may be filled at either Lakewood, CO or location to be determined. This position is eligible for workplace flexibilities which may include remote work or telework options. The final duty location of each selectee will be a joint decision made between each selectee and the hiring official. Locality pay will be adjusted appropriately and determined by the final duty location of each selectee.

Remote Work: Remote work is a flexible work arrangement in which an employee conducts their work from a personally designated location, most often their residence. If your final duty location is anywhere other than Lakewood, CO you will be considered to be a remote worker.

Telework Eligibility: If your final duty location is Lakewood, CO, you may have an option to telework in accordance with the DOI Telework policy and with supervisory approval. The selectee will typically report to the designated physical worksite on a regular and recurring weekly basis.

Are There Any Special Requirements For This Position?

  • If converted to a permanent or term appointment, the anticipated target position will be IT Specialist GS-11; however, the target position and FPL may change based on the need of the organization at that time. Interns must meet the qualification requirements for the position to which converted.
  • If selected, you will be required to provide official transcripts and/or letter from the school stating you are enrolled in a degree/certificateprogram on at least a half time basis in good standing and your expected graduation date.
  • A background investigation will be required for this position. Continued employment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background security investigation and favorable adjudication. Failure to successfully meet these requirements will be grounds for termination.

In order to be eligible for an appointment under the Pathways Internship Program:

  • You must be a student accepted for enrollment or enrolled in a degree or certificate program on a full- or half-time basis as defined by the school (certificate program means post-secondary education, in a qualifying educational institution, equivalent to at least one academic year of full-time study that is part of an accredited college-level, technical, trade, vocational, or business school curriculum); AND
  • Enrollment is with a qualifying educational institution such as a high school or state-approved homeschool; or accredited technical or vocational school; a 2- or 4-year college or university; a graduate or professional school (e.g., law school, medical school); or a post-secondary home school curriculum; AND
  • Students currently enrolled must be in good academic standing maintaining a 2.0 grade point average on a cumulative basis; AND
  • The duties of this position should be related to your academic or career goals.
  • You must continue to meet these eligibility requirements throughout the duration of your appointment under the Pathways Internship Program.

Students who successfully complete the internship program may be eligible for conversion to a permanent appointment or a term (1-4 years in duration) appointment without further competition. Eligibility requirements for conversion: must be a U.S. Citizen; complete at least 640 hours of work experience acquired through the Internship Program (*may waive up to a total of 320 hours under specific conditions); successfully complete your degree or certificate requirements from a qualifying institution; meet the qualification requirements for the position to which you will be converted; meet agency-specific requirements as outlined in the Participant's Agreement; and must have performed successfully in your position as documented through performance evaluations. *NOTE: To learn more about the conditions under which a portion of the work experience hours may be waived, visit https://www.usgs.gov/about/organization/science-support/human-capital/students-and-recent-graduates.

Qualification Requirements

This internship is geared toward students majoring in one of the following areas of study: Information Technology, Computer Science< Statistics, Mathematics

Basic Requirement: Individuals must have IT-related experience demonstrating each of the four competencies listed below.

  1. Attention to Detail - Is thorough when performing work and conscientious about attending to detail.
  2. Customer Service - Works with clients and customers (that is, any individuals who use or receive the services or products that your work unit produces, including the general public, individuals who work in the agency, other agencies, or organizations outside the Government) to assess their needs, provide information or assistance, resolve their problems, or satisfy their expectations; knows about available products and services; is committed to providing quality products and services.
  3. Oral Communication - Expresses information (for example, ideas or facts) to individuals or groups effectively, taking into account the audience and nature of the information (for example, technical, sensitive, controversial); makes clear and convincing oral presentations; listens to others, attends to nonverbal cues, and responds appropriately.
  4. Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.
GS-05:

Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-05 level:

**Successful completion of a full 4 year course of study above high school leading to a bachelor's degree in computer science, information science, information systems management, mathematics, statistics, operations research, or engineering, or course work that required the development or adaptation of computer programs and systems and provided knowledge equivalent to a major in the computer field.

**OR responsible IT experience in all of the competencies listed above.

GS-07: Applicants must meet one of the following to qualify:

**One year of successfully completed graduate level education (18 semester hours, 27 quarter hours or the equivalent) in computer science, information science, information systems management, mathematics, statistics, operations research, or engineering, or course work that required the development or adaptation of computer programs and systems and provided knowledge equivalent to a major in the computer field.

**OR one year of appropriate specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 level in the Federal service that demonstrates performance of tasks such as: (1) Translating detailed logical steps developed by others into language codes that computers accept where this required understanding of procedures and limitations appropriate to use of a programming language; (2) Interviewing subject-matter personnel to get facts regarding work processes, and synthesizing the resulting data into charts showing information flow; (3) Operating computer consoles where this involved choosing from among various procedures in responding to machine commands or unscheduled halts; (4) Scheduling the sequence of programs to be processed by computers where alternatives had to be weighed with a view to production efficiency; or (5) Preparing documentation on cost/benefit studies where this involved summarizing the materials and organizing it in a logical fashion. For task examples 1-5, the level of work typically would have involved receiving clear, specific, and detailed instructions as to the methods, procedures, and guidelines to use.
