Duties

Help
  • Serves as the Museum Specialist (Collections Manager) at the JFK Special Warfare Museum.
  • Charged with the research, accession and catalog, management, conservation, display, numbering and interpretation of artifacts, macro-artifacts, and historic weapons in the museum?s historical collections
  • Inventory museum collection, on and off-site within timeline parameters which includes documenting and annotating discrepancies and/or additions.
  • Responsible for identifying and obtaining historical objects, ensuring that all paperwork and procedures are complete.
  • Currently thereby meeting all ethical and legal standards as well as ensuring the artifacts comply with museum?s scope of collections.
  • Ensure CMH centralized database is accurate and up-to-date, identifying empty fields, missing photographs and inaccurate or outdated entries.
  • Ensures collections and records are accessible by researchers and exhibitors in accordance with Command policies, accepted professional practice based on professional experience and judgment.
  • Communicates well at all levels in order to best respond to queries by the public, Command, other offices and institutions and fellow staff members
  • Collaborate with other staff members and in groups to determine future plans and anticipated programming goals.
  • Perform independent research through digital and traditional forms to determine accurate narratives for the collection, draft exhibit text, answer queries and/or publish on the collection.
  • Work independently to develop or assist in developing programming and long range planning documents. Transform conceptual ideas, themes and missions into concrete goals.

  • Appointment may be subject to a suitability or fitness determination, as determined by a completed background investigation.
  • Position is to be working in a warehouse environment and there will be lots of standing, stooping, stretching and lifting of materials.
  • Work rotational weekends and holidays and will have to be available to answer alarms if they occur.
  • May be required to work evening, night, weekend and holiday hours.
  • Obtain and maintain a Secret Clearance
  • Two year trial/probationary period may be required.

In order to qualify, you must meet the expierence requirements described below. Basic Requirement for: Museum Curator
Degree: Bachelor's degree (or higher degree) in museum work; or in an applicable subject-matter field such as Museum.
OR
Combination of Education and Experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education OR
Experience: Four years of experience that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the four year course of study as shown in A above.In addition to meeting the basic requirement above, to qualify for this position you must also meet the qualification requirements listed below:


Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes Work independently to develop or assist in developing programming and long range planning documents. Transform conceptual ideas, themes and missions into concrete goals. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the second lower grade/level position in the federal service (GS-09).

OR

Education: Master's or equivalent graduate degree in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as Museum.

OR

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the first year (total graduate semester hours minus 18) by 18. Add the two percentages

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).
