Duties

Help
  • Receives incoming telephone calls and/or visitors; answers general questions from internal and external customers or refers customers to the appropriate staff member.
  • Under the direction of a higher-level HR Specialist, utilizes an automated system to process a full range of recurring personnel actions for General Schedule (GS) and Federal Wage Systems (FWS) positions.
  • Assists HR Staff in preparing onboarding information to new hires; ensure the selectee has completed all required paperwork, and that the new employee has been thoroughly briefed regarding the organization.
  • Establishes and maintains electronic official personnel folders and ensures the documents and folders are up to date.
  • Provides customer support and administrative support using office automation to type a wide variety of reports, graphs, forms, etc.
  • Compiles data and prepares reports as requested.
  • Prepares memos and/or correspondence as requested.

Qualifications

To be eligible, an applicant must:
-Be at least 16 years of age or older for a non-arduous or non-hazardous duty position.
-Be a student who has been accepted for enrollment or is currently enrolled at least half-time in a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) seeking program in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school.
-Possess a cumulative GPA of at least 2.5 or higher.

To be creditable, experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade (GS-4) of the position to be filled.

Specialized Experience: For the GS-5 grade level, you may qualify based on (1) completion of four (4) years above the high school level in any field for which high school graduation or the equivalent is the normal prerequisite. This education must have been obtained in an accredited business, secretarial or technical school, junior college, college or university, (2) 1 year of creditable specialized experience equivalent to the GS-4 grade level, and/or (3) combination of education and experience. Examples of specialized experience include but are not limited to performing clerical duties such as establishing and maintaining office files and records; receiving and referring telephone callers and visitors to the appropriate staff member; and using a computer to perform administrative duties such as typing, scanning documents, and data entry.

Physical Demands: The work is typically sedentary. Some work may require periods of walking, standing, bending, or driving a motor vehicle. The trainee may frequently lift relatively light boxes, materials, and supplies and/or carry file folders, copied materials, books, and other similar materials.

Work Environment: Work is typically located in an adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated office environment. The work environment may involve everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, mail distribution centers, meeting and training rooms, libraries, or motor vehicles.

Additional information

This position is for students accepted for enrollment or are currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in an accredited high school, technical or vocational school, 2-year or 4-year college or university, graduate or professional school, on a full- or half-time basis (as defined by the academic institution in which the student is enrolled).

This is a career development, excepted service appointment under the BLM Pathways Internship Program that is expected to last more than 1 year. The BLM will require the selected applicant to complete a Participant Agreement in which the selectee must provide an anticipated date for completing all degree program requirements, and show continual progression toward meeting the stated anticipated date.

The agency may noncompetitively convert a Career/Indefinite Intern who is a U. S. citizen to a term or permanent appointment in the competitive service, as long as the Intern meets all agency program requirements and the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualification Standards for the target occupational series at the time of completing all education requirements.

If converted to a permanent or term appointment, the anticipated target position will be a Human Resources Assistant with full performance level (FPL) of GS-07; however, the target position and FPL may change based on the need of the organization at that time.

Travel and relocation expenses will not be paid by the Department of the Interior. Any travel, transportation and relocation expenses associated with reporting for duty in this position will be the responsibility of the selected employee.

The official worksite for the selectee is the duty station identified in this vacancy announcement. The selectee will typically report to this duty location on a regular and recurring weekly basis. The selectee may be allowed to telework with supervisor approval.
