Duties

Help
  • Selects and implements appropriate mix of commercial software packages and in-house developed software to satisfy agency-wide database requirements.
  • Designs and develops or modifies software for accessing databases and files used in the ACP processes.
  • Performs studies or analyses on factors such as amount of storage space consumed and needed, access time statistics, frequencies of reads and writes, and unusual problems encountered by applications programmers using support systems software.
  • Designs and analyzes databases which includes the physical design of the database, schema and subschema definitions and space allocations.
  • Designs specialized evaluation techniques to monitor database performance and defines modifications necessary to improve the performance of the database.
  • Attends meetings with applications personnel to provide advice on systems software capabilities and limitations.
  • Presents project status briefings and recommendations concerning long range database management systems plans to AEP management in SSA.
  • Assists in developing programming techniques for use by systems and applications programmers in SSA; and has responsibility for maintaining guidance for use of the data repository system.

Qualifications

To qualify for this GS-12 IT Specialist (SysAdmin) position you must demonstrate
A. IT Competencies required for the GS-2210 series AND
B. At least 52 weeks of Specialized Experience

To qualify for the 2210 IT Specialist series, applicants must demonstrate the following IT-related competencies:

Problem Solving - Identifies problems; determines accuracy and relevance of information; uses sound judgment to generate and evaluate alternatives, and to make recommendations.

In addition, to qualify for this GS-12 level position, applicants must possess and demonstrate 52 weeks of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 level (or above) in the federal service that is in or related to the work of the position filled and has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. Such IT-related experience must include skill in troubleshooting Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) OR Geographical Information Systems (GIS) user and software problems.

This specialized experience is REQUIRED and must be explicitly documented/described in your resume or you will be disqualified from further consideration. This is a bargaining unit position represented by AFGE.

Salary will be set in accordance with locality pay provisions.

Successful performance in this position will be assessed during the 1-year probationary period served by all new appointees (e.g., new to SSA and/or new to this series).
