Summary

This position is located in Smithsonian Institution's (SI) Smithsonian Gardens (SG). The primary function of this position is to serve as the contracting officer's technical representative (COTR) for SG's structural pest control integrated pest management services program for all Smithsonian facilities in Washington, DC; Virginia, New York and Maryland which involves the implementation of a least-risk pest management for insects and commensal rodents.

Duties

Help

  • Performs on-site pest evaluations to museums and galleries of the Smithsonian Institution monitoring for potentially damaging structural insects and rodents.
  • Selects and applies appropriate least-risk management practices in the control of pests. 
  • Mixes pesticides, calibrates pesticide mix for proper dilution and applies pesticides in a safe manner.
  • Prepares technical information reports on structural pest control which includes summarizing, analyzing, and reporting pest management inspection data.
  • Assists in oversight of management and integration of pest control contractor’s performance.
  • Schedules pest information meetings with museum staff.  Works with Smithsonian staff to review environmental conditions and provides recommendations to eliminate pests.
  • Provides technical guidance through training and instruction to Smithsonian staff.

In addition to Basic Requirement below you must also have the following experience:

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.  For this position specialized experience is defined as experience managing pest control contracts or managing pest control services for commercial accounts such as commercial kitchens, health care facilities, zoos, museums and childcare facilities.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week. 

Education

Basic Requirement:

(You must submit unofficial school transcripts)

Degree in entomology; or a related discipline of the biological or physical sciences that included at least 16 semester hours in entomology. 

OR

A combination of education and experience courses equivalent to a major that included course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

  • Knowledge of the principles, practices, and techniques of urban and structural integrated pest management to implement complex pest management solutions.
  • Ability to oversee the work of others.
  • Skill in applying the principles, concepts, practices, and methods of entomology.
  • Skill in written communications.
  • Skill in oral communications in developing and maintaining effective working relationships.
