Summary

This position is located in the Translational Biobehavioral and Health Disparities Branch (TBHD). The ideal candidate will possess the necessary skills and attributes to serve as an expert statistical advisor to the TBHD Branch in the development of innovative approaches for conducting research in a clinical setting, as well as to support the general NIH research training mission. Additional experience in bioinformatics including disease specific microbiome analytics is also preferred.

Duties

Help

Duties and Responsibilities of this position include, but are not limited to:

  • Serving as the statistical expert in the TBHD and provides statistical consultative services and clinical data management support for medical projects to support the research mission of the TBHD, the Clinical Center and NIH institutes;
  • In addition to the aforementioned, also serving as a Principal Investigator and/or Associate Investigator for various clinical research protocols conducting weekly reviews with the clinical research team to identify problems and other events requiring reporting to the Institutional Review Board (IRB), study sponsor, or both;
  • Providing leadership and supporting innovative computing and bioinformatics systems and methodologies that provide researchers with the ability to analyze and interpret large amounts of data by collaborating with medical and interdisciplinary staff colleagues to produce advanced analysis from development to dissemination of results;
  • Exercising creativity and originality in converting a broadly stated objective into concrete plans and implementations;
  • Keeping abreast of current statistical and mathematical research methods applicable to the Clinical Center research mission and for being a liaison to biostatistical/clinical epidemiological researchers at other NIH institutes and outside organizations;
  • Presenting work at scientific meetings, conference and seminars, and is published in professional reviewed journals.

Qualifications

To qualify for a 1530-14 Statistician (Medicine) Position, you must:

A. Have a degree that included 15 semester hours in statistics (or in mathematics and statistics, provided at least 6 semester hours were in statistics), and 9 additional semester hours in one or more of the following: physical or biological sciences, medicine, education, or engineering; or in the social sciences including demography, history, economics, social welfare, geography, international relations, social or cultural anthropology, health sociology, political science, public administration, psychology, etc. Credit toward meeting statistical course requirements is given for courses in which 50 percent of the course content appears to be statistical methods, e.g., courses that included studies in research methods in psychology or economics such as tests and measurements or business cycles, or courses in methods of processing mass statistical data such as tabulating methods or electronic data processing.

OR

B. Have a combination of education and experience -- courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education. The experience should have included a full range of professional statistical work such as (a) sampling, (b) collecting, computing, and analyzing statistical data, and (c) applying statistical techniques such as measurement of central tendency, dispersion, skewness, sampling error, simple and multiple correlation, analysis of variance, and tests of significance.

AND

In Addition, to qualify for a GS-14 level Statistician (Medical) Position, you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 obtained in either the private or public sector that included the following tasks and responsibilities: initiating, formulating, planning, and executing the statistical portion of analytic research projects; analyzing, interpreting and disseminating statistical research results for health-related study programs; applying complex modeling techniques to determine statistical associations in the health field (e.g., logistic regression and survival rates); and developing and using automated statistical applications and software programs to analyze statistical data.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

In practical terms, this mission translates into a mandate to provide national leadership in the development of standards for clinical and community-based research, the development of innovative approaches for conducting research in clinical and community settings, as well as to support the general NIH research training mission by providing a setting and models for education and development of research staff.
