This is a term appointment not to exceed 13 months with possible extensions up to a total of 4 years without further competition. Appointment to this position will not convey permanent status in the Federal service.

This is an interdisciplinary position. Selectee will be hired as a Geographer or Cartographer

Help

As a Geographer or Cartographer within the Geology, Minerals, Energy, and Geophysics Science Center, some of your specific duties will include:

-Oversee the management of a large data library used by multiple geologic mapping projects. Includes managing the organization, acquisition, deprecation, and documentation of Terabytes of spatial and non-spatial data stored in a variety of formats.

-Provide GIS technical expertise and support to project scientists. Includes activities such as: working one-on-one with project scientists to resolve workflow issues; creating written documents describing best-practices, methods, and procedures; providing group training sessions; and preparing varied datasets (e.g. remote sensing, elevation data, analog geologic maps, well data) for further use by project scientists.

-Assist in the preparation of geologic map databases and cartographic products for review and publication. Includes activities such as preparing metadata, performing digital reviews to ensure compliance with NCGMP and bureau standards, and preparing cartographic and interpretive products.

-Automate workflows to support and improve the efficiency of tasks related to data management, GIS, and the preparation of cartographic products and data for publication. Includes programming/scripting (e.g., with Arcade or Python), use of automation tools (e.g., Model Builder), and by establishing new workflows, by linking together and adapting existing tools in creative ways.

-Research and implement emerging software and hardware technologies that are beneficial to the compilation, management, and analysis of geologic information. Examples include testing mobile field data collection apps, web-based GIS solutions for collaborative editing of data, and data management and hosting solutions (e.g. ImageServer).

-Operates a government vehicle as an incidental driver.

Please Note: The duties listed above are at the GS-11 level. At the lower grade level, the selectee will perform a wide range of tasks described in the above duties, but at a lower level of work designed to further develop and refine the knowledge and skills of the individual. Assignments will typically combine productive work with on-going training and instruction. Supervision received at the lower level will be closer with oversight and review being provided more frequently.

Working Conditions: The work is primarily sedentary, typically performed in an office environment. Some work may require walking in conjunction with travel and attending meetings, workshops, and conferences away from the work site, or for the purpose of developing and testing mobile field data collection workflows.


SALARY INFORMATION:
GS-09: $54,727 (Step 01) to $71,146 (Step 10);
GS-11: $66,214 (Step 01) to $86,074 (Step 10);
NOTE: First time hires to the Federal Government are typically hired at the Step 01.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR GEOGRAPHER, GS-0150: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Geographer, all grade levels.

A. Degree in geography; or related physical or social science such as geology, meteorology, economics, statistics, sociology, anthropology, political science, history, cartography, computer science, urban studies, or planning that included at least 24 semester hours in geography or related fields.

**OR

B. A combination of education and experience-- courses equivalent to a major in geography, or a related field that included at least 24 semesters hours in geography or related fields, as shown in "A" above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT FOR CARTOGRAPHER, GS-1370: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Cartographer, all grade levels.

A. Degree: cartography; or a major that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography and/or directly related science, and related mathematics. Such course work includes, but is not limited to, cartography, astronomy, geodesy, photogrammetry, physical and geological oceanography, computer science, land surveying, geophysics, physical geography, and remote sensing. The 30 semester hours must have included at least 6, but no more than 15, semester hours of college level, non-business mathematics or statistics (i.e. college-level algebra, trigonometry, calculus, or scientific mathematics or statistics requiring equivalent college-level courses as prerequisites).

**OR

B. Combination of education and experience-courses equivalent to a major in cartography, or a minor that included or was supplemented by at least 30 semester hours in cartography, and/or directly related science, and related mathematics, as shown in "A" above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For GS-09: In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-09 level:

**Master's or equivalent graduate degree in geography, cartography or other directly related field of study or 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education (36 semester hours, 54 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a master's degree in geography, cartography or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.

**OR one year of appropriate professional experience in geography or cartography that is equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service.

Examples of such experience could include: 1). compiling and evaluating basic geographical facts from a variety of specified sources, ascertaining discrepancies in data, and presenting geographical information from specified maps, charts, and other source materials in the most useful format: 2). evaluating available source material pertinent to charting areas of regular bottom characteristics and simple topography. Knowledge of cartographic concepts, theories and principles, methods and practices and skill sufficient to complete routine production processes improvement projects. This level of work would have involved following established methods and procedures or detailed instructions and would have required a familiarity with a variety of basic geographic tools and sources or a good general working knowledge of the principles and the theories of cartography.

For GS-11: In addition to the basic education requirement stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-11 level:

**Three years of progressively higher-level graduate education (54 semester hours or 81 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a Ph.D. degree in geography or cartography or other directly related field of study or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree in geography or cartography or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.

**OR one year of appropriate professional experience in geography or cartography that is equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal service.

Examples of such experience include: 1.) independent responsibility to research, analyze, select and prepare photographic and cartographic materials, conduct studies to determine the design characteristics, limitation, and application of program requirements for a well-defined study or for a phase of a larger study that required the planning and carrying out of cartography work: 2.) locating, examining, evaluating and selecting, from a variety of source materials, information for use in depicting the location and standardizing the nomenclature of physical and humane features on a map, chart or in a gazetteer: 3.) determining the distribution of like phenomena (e.g., deciduous vegetation or precipitation) over Eastern U.S., or comparing the distribution of two or three different kinds of phenomena, e.g., deciduous vegetation and precipitation: 4.) providing assistance to a higher-graded researcher on small, self-contained studies. This work would have required the individual to select and make minor adaptations to procedures and accepted practices and handle unexpected conditions arising in the normal course of the work. At this level, geographers or cartographers have a sound working knowledge of the principles of geography or cartography and the ability to independently perform moderately difficult and responsible scientific work.
