Duties

Help

Duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Reports on developments in domestic and international news markets, with a focus on human rights and/or media freedom, editing experience, and multimedia skills. Coverage also includes complex legal or political matters that are reported and presented in an accessible and engaging way.
  • The work requires the incumbent to rely on additional language skills and experience working closely with colleagues for whom English is a second language. The understanding of different cultures and customs will assist with accomplishing mutual goals for the news centers objectives.
  • Researches and reporters on newsworthy media freedom matters of interest to VOA audiences. Material may be filmed for radio, TV, web or social media at the direction of the News Center's Press Freedom editor.
  • The incumbent will provide journalistic support to include, leading a large enterprise or multimedia project or writing spot news pieces and assisting in editing. This duty may include, shooting, editing and reporting, and completing post-production work.
  • The incumbent is responsible for handling all video elements, including audio and lighting elements while on assignment. Collaborates on deciding on shots for the video; may also have a video editor produce his/her final package. Incumbent voices completed pieces for broadcast; writes scripts, web and social media reports suitable for translation by VOA language services. Recommends stories to editors; researches background material; formulates and pursues interviews;establishes and maintains contacts with experts; attends and records breaking news events, speeches, press conferences, formal statements, etc. As instructed, collaborates with Media Freedom Multimedia Journalist I colleagues, other VOA journalists and interns.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience is experience that has equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. For this position, the following specialized experience is required:
To qualify for the GS-12 the following specialized experience is requires: Applicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-11 which is directly related to this line of work for Press Freedom Multimedia Reporter.

  • Knowledge of TV and radio broadcasting techniques, to include, camera and video editing proficiency.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of journalistic writing for radio broadcasts to produce correspondent reports and skill in voicing reports.
  • Knowledge of human rights, global politics and media freedom issues of target audiences, their history, customs, governmental institutions and policies; to include, skills in identifying world and U.S. events of particular relevance to these audiences.
  • Knowledge of TV and radio broadcasting techniques, to include, camera and video editing proficiency used to produce various pieces of recording and telecommunications equipment.
To qualify for the GS-13 the following specialized experience is requiresApplicant must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the next lower grade GS-12 which is directly related to this line of work for Press Freedom Multimedia Reporter.
  • Expert knowledge of TV and radio broadcasting techniques, to include, camera and video editing proficiency used to produce various pieces of recording and telecommunications equipment.
  • Mastery knowledge of human rights, global politics, and media freedom issues of target audiences, their history, customs, governmental institutions and policies; to include, skills in identifying world and U.S. events of particular relevance to these audiences.
  • Knowledge of U.S. policies, domestic and international affairs, political, economic and historic developments, world conditions, public attitudes and trends used to identify significant events and relating coverage of those events to larger issues.
  • Expert knowledge of the principles and practices of journalistic writing for radio broadcasts to produce correspondent reports and skill in voicing reports.
