Help

As a GS-7, Performance Auditor (Recent Graduate), the individual receives training through classroom and specific on-the-job training assignments to become well versed in evaluation and review techniques, DOJ programs, legislation and regulations, and industry practices. Specific responsibilities include:

  • Working with experienced auditors and program analysts, the incumbent gathers financial and operating records relating to segments of audits, traces transactions to and from source documents, and identifies unusual or questionable transactions or practices that do not fit instructions or guidelines.
  • Examining operating practices and procedures to validate reports, determine compliance with governing regulations, and provide the basis for the development of an opinion on the efficiency and effectiveness of operations.
  • Composing draft work papers and summaries for reviews, performing data analysis, and developing draft finding sheets that clearly identify the logic flow. The Auditor submits all work to the electronic work system so that it can be used and reviewed by supervisors and other team members.
  • Supporting the team and developing productive relationships through engaging in collaboration and coordination with internal and external parties.
As a GS-9, Performance Auditor (Recent Graduate), the individual serves as a team member on an assigned evaluation/review, assisting senior members on carrying out the activities involved in performance and financial reviews/evaluations of DOJ programs and activities. Specific responsibilities include:
  • Helping conduct evaluation and review surveys and assisting in preparation of survey and verification programs. The Auditor may conduct reviews of small programs or activities of limited scope. The incumbent performs research, conducts interviews, and analyzes documentation. On larger reviews, the Auditor assists senior members with all of these activities by gathering and analyzing data and making recommendations based on that analysis.
  • Composing draft work papers and summaries for reviews, performing data analysis, and developing draft finding sheets that clearly identify the logic flow. The Auditor submits all work to the electronic work system so that it can be used and reviewed by supervisors and other team members.
  • Supporting the team and developing productive relationships through engaging in collaboration and coordination with internal and external parties.
  • Engaging in ongoing development to become well versed in evaluation and review techniques, DOJ programs, legislation and regulations, and industry practices.
Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

Qualifications

Recent Graduate Program Eligibility: To meet these requirements, you must have obtained a qualifying associate's, bachelor's, master's, professional, doctoral, or technical/vocational degree or certificate from a qualifying educational institution within the previous 2 years from close of announcement date.

Preference-eligible veterans who have been precluded from applying due to their military service obligation have as much as 6 years after acquiring a qualifying degree to apply.

Basic Education Requirements
All applicants must meet one of the of the following basic eligibility requirements to qualify for this position:

  • Degree: auditing; or a degree in a related field such as business administration, finance, public administration or accounting.
or
  • Combination of education and experience: at least 4 years of experience in Performance Auditing, or an equivalent combination of performance auditing experience, college-level education, and training that provided professional auditing knowledge. The applicant's background must also include one of the following:
    1. A certificate as a Certified Internal Auditor or a Certified Public Accountant, obtained through written examination; or
    2. Completion of the requirements for a degree that included substantial course work in auditing or accounting, e.g., 15 semester hours.
In addition to the basic eligibility requirements, applicants must have the following specialized experience and/or directly related education or a combination:
(Note: Specialized experience is paid or unpaid experience that has equipped the applicant with the specific knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform the duties of the position in the practical application of professional accounting and auditing principles, procedures, and techniques successfully.)

At the GS-7 level, applicants must have either: (1) 1 year of graduate-level education, (2) a bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement or (3) 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-5 level. Examples of specialized experience include but are not limited to performing routine accounting assignments, verifying reported findings to source documents, and reconciling working papers.

At the GS-9 level, applicants must have 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or equivalent degree or 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-7 level. Specialized experience includes but is not limited to performing technical accounting assignments, verifying reports against source accounts, assisting in the preparation of audit work papers, and determining that approved accounting policies and procedures are followed.
