Program Directors have an unparalleled opportunity and responsibility to ensure that NSF-funded research is at the forefront of advancing fundamental knowledge.  In support of this, Program Directors are responsible for extensive interaction with academic research communities and industry, as well as interaction with other Federal agencies that may lead to the development of interagency collaborations.  Within this context, Program Directors solicit, receive and review research and education proposals, make funding recommendations, administer awards, and undertake interaction with research communities in these fields.  They are also responsible for service to Foundation-wide activities and initiatives that together accomplish NSF’s strategic goals to: (1) transform the frontiers of science and engineering, (2) stimulate innovation and address societal needs through research and education, and (3) excel as a federal science agency.  The position requires a commitment to high standards of intellectualism and ethical conduct, a considerable breadth of interest, receptivity to new ideas, a strong sense of fairness, good judgment, and a high degree of personal integrity.  

The responsibilities of the NSF Program Director include, for example, long-range planning and budget development, the administration of the merit review process and proposal recommendations, the preparation of press releases, feature articles and material describing advances in the research supported, and coordination and liaison with other programs in NSF, other Federal agencies and organizations.  Additional duties and responsibilities include: program planning and management, representation communication and leadership.  Continuing professional development is expected of Program Directors.

The Division of Chemical, Bioengineering, Environmental and Transport Processes in the Directorate for Engineering seeks to fill a position in the Environmental Engineering Program:

The goal of the Environmental Engineering program is to support potentially transformative fundamental research that applies scientific and engineering principles to 1) prevent, minimize, or re-use solid, liquid, and gaseous discharges of pollution to soil, water, and air by closing resource loops or through other measures; 2) mitigate the ecological and human-health impacts of such releases by smart/adaptive/reactive amendments or manipulation of the environment, and 3) remediate polluted environments through engineered chemical, biological, and/or geo-physical processes. Integral to achieving these goals is a fundamental understanding of the transport and biogeochemical reactivity of pollutants in the environment. Therefore, research on environmental micro/biology, environmental chemistry, and environmental geophysics may be relevant providing the research has a clear objective of protecting human and ecological health.

Qualifications

Candidates must have a Ph.D. in Environmental Engineering or a closely related field, plus after award of the Ph.D., six or more years of successful research, research administration, and/or managerial experience pertinent to the position. You must identify the date that your degree was obtained.

Qualifications of a successful candidate include a Ph.D. degree in subject matter relevant to Environmental Engineering. Experience with applications to the engineering sciences is preferred. The position requires effective oral and written communication skills, and familiarity with NSF programs and activities is desirable. The candidate is expected to function effectively as a member of crosscutting and interactive teams as well as an individual contributor.  The candidate should also demonstrate a capability to work across government agencies to promote NSF activities and to leverage program funds through interagency collaborations.

This position is outside the competitive civil service.

  4. Knowledge and understanding of the mission and goals of the National Science Foundation (NSF) as well as how NSF interacts with the scientific community.
  5. Demonstrated experience in supporting diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility efforts within the scientific community.
