The National Assessment Governing Board, a broadly representative, 26-member Board established by the U.S. Congress to set policy for the National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), is looking for a dynamic leader to serve as Deputy Executive Director. The incumbent will serve as the Executive Director's chief of staff and principal advisor, executing strategic and programmatic priorities to support the Board in its policy-setting role.

The incumbent will serve as the Executive Director's chief of staff and principal advisor, executing strategic and programmatic priorities to support the Board in its policy-setting role.
The Deputy Executive Director serves as the Executive Director's chief of staff and principal advisor and executes a range of strategic and programmatic priorities to support the Board in its policy setting role. The Deputy Executive Director is a key leader responsible for executing program and operational areas of work to attain the Governing Board’s strategic goals.
The Deputy Executive Director shall:
Lead implementation of the Board’s programmatic priorities, ensuring the Board and Board staff are working towards attainment of strategic priorities efficiently and in a timely manner. This includes both managing up and across the organization:
Managing up: Facilitates the decision-making of the Executive Director and Board leadership by analyzing complex or technical issues, identifying solutions, framing recommendations, and communicating risks and issues promptly and succinctly;
Managing across: Provide program management oversight and direction for the Board’s technical staff by establishing key goals and metrics, leading the team towards high-quality execution of those goals, and providing oversight and direction in the timely preparation of Board meeting agendas and supporting materials;
In collaboration with the Executive Director, work with Board leadership to identify key policy priorities and determine program direction in areas that fall under the congressionally mandated responsibilities of the Board;
Serve as a catalyst in stimulating new and innovative ideas, analyze advanced concepts for the solution of complex problems related to National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP), implement the Board’s strategic plans, and lead staff in executing long-range goals;
Work closely with the staff of the National Center for Education Statistics to ensure that policy decisions of the Board are effectively implemented with the operational needs of NAEP;
Ensure the technical staff’s work is consistent with Board policy, guidelines, standards, and procedures;
Assist the Board, technical staff, and Contracts Officer in identifying and securing the expert resources needed to inform the Board’s policy priorities, such as organizing and contracting with study groups of federal and non-federal experts who have the knowledge needed by the Board to accomplish its work;
Lead efforts to recruit and solicit nominations for prospective Board members (in accordance with the policies and procedures of the Board’s Nominations Committee), onboard new Governing Board members to the Board’s work and culture, and sustain the operating policies and collaborative culture of the Board; and
Collaborate with the Board’s Executive Officer to formulate annual budget submissions and to oversee execution to achieve the Governing Board’s strategic vision and program priorities.

Ability to work and communicate with elected and appointed officials, professional organizations, interest groups, educators, parents, the general public, and the media; and
Experience representing organizations before governmental agencies, legislative bodies, professional groups, and/or the general public.
