Duties

Help

As a Financial Litigation Technician - Debt Collection Specialist in the United States Attorney's Office (USAO), you will:

- Obtains and analyzes financial information on debtors to determine their present and future potential ability to pay.
- Initiates contact with debtors concerning payment of their obligations, their ability to pay, and negotiates written payment schedules to assure successful collection of debts.
- Conducts skiptracing activity when necessary to locate debtors, using own discretion in determining those techniques and any follow up needed to locate the debtor.
- Reviews and reconciles computerized debt collection printouts with office collection records.
- Makes determinations as to the appropriateness and cost effectiveness of pursuing the obligation either by suit or proceedings subsequent to the entry of judgment to enforce collection.
- Interprets and enforces judgments in criminal cases, and independently performs all functions to collect amounts imposed as a result of the prosecution of criminal cases.
- Communicates with debtors to present options for debt payments, answer questions, explain pertinent procedures, clarify information and work cases to resolution.

Responsibilities will increase and assignments will become more complex as your training and experience progress.

  • Initial appointment is conditioned upon a satisfactory pre-employment adjudication. This includes fingerprint, credit and tax checks, and drug testing. Continued employment is subject to a favorable adjudication of a background investigation

Qualifications

GS-7: To be eligible at the GS-7 level, you must meet the Specialized Experience requirement below:

Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-6 level.

Specialized experience is defined as experience performing a variety of technical support work requiring knowledge of the laws, regulations, and requirements of financial litigation. Examples of specialized experience may include the following: obtaining and analyzing financial information on debtors, initiating contact with debtors, conducting skiptracing activity, communicating with debtors to present options for debt payments, and producing a variety of written documents and materials utilizing a wide range of office software applications ensuring proper format, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar.

GS-8: To be eligible at the GS-8 level, you must meet the Specialized Experience requirement below:

Specialized Experience: One full year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-7 level.

Specialized experience is defined as experience performing a variety of technical support work requiring expert knowledge of the laws, regulations, and requirements of financial litigation. Examples of specialized experience may include the following: complex identification of debtor assets, evaluation of complex financial information on debtors, and conducting debt collection processes such as advanced skiptracing to resolve especially difficult problems. In addition, producing a variety of written documents and materials utilizing a wide range of office software applications ensuring proper format, spelling, punctuation, capitalization, and grammar.




Interagency Career Transition Assistance Plan (ICTAP)- The ICTAP provides eligible displaced Federal competitive service employees with selection priority over other candidates for competitive service vacancies.
