Summary

As a member of NASA/GSFC's X-ray astrophysics laboratory, you will carry out research to support and promote high resolution X-ray spectroscopy. You will: Play a key role in providing theoretical support for analysis and modeling of high resolution X-ray spectra; Develop and innovate modeling/analysis tools for the study of X-ray spectra; Perform research and publish on the spectra of cosmic X-ray sources; Contribute to concept development, science case and advocacy for future missions.

  • Duties described below are at the full-performance level. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.
  • Conduct an independent program of theoretical and/or observational astronomical research, studying active galaxies, black holes, neutron stars, clusters of galaxies, supernova remnants, or other cosmic sources of X-rays.
  • Aid and/or lead proposals for funding to support theoretical or laboratory studies of microphysical processes associated with high spectral resolution X-ray spectra.
  • Play a leading role in the theoretical interpretation of high-resolution X-ray spectroscopic data such as obtained with the XRISM and/or Athena missions.
  • Model high resolution X-ray spectra and associated atomic processes from astrophysical sources that will be observed by the instruments on spectroscopic missions, as well as playing a key role in theoretical interpretation of these spectra.
  • Present and publish peer-reviewed research on X-ray spectra modeling, as well as on the science enabled by high resolution X-ray spectroscopic missions.
  • Aid and/or lead the development and maintenance of analysis or modeling software for high resolution X-ray spectra.
  • Participate in and/or lead concept development for future instrumentation and missions, including developing the science case for missions and/or performing public advocacy.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

Vacant research positions may be filled at one of several grade levels depending upon the scientific impact of the person selected. A review may be required to determine the appropriate grade level of the position and supplemental materials may be required from the selectee. Please keep this in mind when indicating the lowest grade you will accept.

To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the federal sector:

  • modeling astrophysical spectra as evidenced by participation in past missions and/or published papers on these topics;
  • developing or presenting presentations, publications, and proposals; and
  • performing theoretical or observational studies of the astrophysics of cosmic X-ray sources as evidenced by published papers on these topics.

To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level in the federal sector:
  • leading in the field of study of astrophysical spectra, as evidenced by publications, including review articles;
  • overseeing development of software tools for modeling or analyzing high resolution X-ray spectra; and
  • participating in international exchanges or collaborations.
Experience utilizing tools and techniques associated with laboratory astrophysics studies of the physical processes affecting astrophysical spectra is preferred, but not required.

Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
