Help

As a Supervisory Research Ecologist within the Columbia Environmental Research Center, some of your specific duties will include:

  • Proposes, designs, conducts, and communicates research on restoration ecology, remediation of contaminated ecosystems, or related fields. Executes research, manage budget, and deliver research results.
  • Works with management agencies to develop research plans and study designs to address management needs. Completes studies and deliver results to management and the scientific community in a timely manner.
  • Prepares proposals and secures funding to conduct research on ecosystem recovery related to habitat restoration and contaminant remediation.
  • Communicates results in written and oral forms including peer reviewed scientific journal articles, presentations at professional conferences, and briefings to decision-makers.
  • Supervises activities of scientists at career levels ranging from 'Principal Investigators' to technical support staff. Manages research budgets for multiple projects and staff.
  • Operates a government owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver.
Physical Demands: The work assignments normally involve 80 percent office and 20 percent field effort. Office assignments are generally sedentary. Occasional lifting and carrying necessary supplies may be required. Some work requires periods of walking, standing, bending, and climbing.

Work Environment: Work is performed in an office, laboratory, and/or in the field. The office is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. Field and laboratory duties may require the use of special protective gear. The incumbent is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property with which entrusted.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet the following to satisfy the basic education requirement for Ecologist, all grade levels.

Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in biology or a related field of science underlying ecological research that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in basic and applied biological sciences. These hours must have included at least 9 semester hours or the equivalent in ecology, and 12 semester hours or the equivalent in physical and mathematical sciences.

For GS-13:

In addition to meeting the Basic Requirements, possess one year of specialized experience at or equal to the GS-12 grade level in the Federal service

Examples of experience at the GS-12 level may include: working independently or as a full member of a research team conceiving, formulating, and conducting research relevant to ecological restoration and contaminant remediation; experience preparing descriptive scientific reports on the results of the research activities for publication and administrative use; experience authoring or co-authoring publications and other products that contribute to the scientific understanding of ecological restoration and contaminant remediation; and attending scientific and interagency meetings to present results and exchange information within the scientific community.

2. Knowledge or ability to conduct scientific studies and publish results related to ecological restoration of contaminated aquatic and/or terrestrial ecosystems following remedial activities.
3. Ability to propose, secure funding, and lead original, interdisciplinary and collaborative research designed to address ecosystem recovery from contaminant remediation and habitat restoration. generate study designs and study plans with complex but accomplishable procedures and goals, and which provide for robust statistical analysis.
4. Ability to communicate research results effectively, in oral and written forms, in peer-reviewed journal articles and presentations at professional conferences to other scientists, and in informational reports, briefings, and technical consultations with decision makers.
5. Ability to supervise, train, and oversee the activities and organize collaborative research projects of scientific staff at diverse career levels ranging from Ph.D. level scientists to more junior, technical staff. Knowledge or ability to manage research budgets.
