Duties

Help
  • Makes geological observations, computations, and measurements.
  • Responsible for performing work that involves knowledge and application of the principles of geology, and being responsible for planning, initiating, directing , and executing the minerals program activities.
  • Plans, initiates, directs and exercises oversight over mining industry, sales, permits and leases to assure the orderly development and conservation on minerals materials, locatable and leasable minerals on public lands.
  • Analyzes and interprets geological and geophysical data and carries out investigations in accordance with instructions from a senior scientist or project chief.
  • Communicates findings in a variety of formats and settings.
  • May assist in the development or editing of geologic maps for digital or print publication.

Qualifications

To qualify at the GS-7 level you must meet one of the following:
Specialized Experience: Applicants must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the the GS-05 level in geology related work. Work assignments must be diverse, limited in complexity and selected to provide experience and training to you. Examples: provide assistance in processing applications to conduct oil and gas drilling; assist in the review of mineral exploration proposals; prepare environmental assessments for minerals activities; advise the public on law, regulations and procedures that pertain to mining claims, material sales and mineral leasing.

18 semester hours of graduate-level education in a directly related field OR Superior Academic Achievement (See OPM's General Policies, Application of Qualification Standards Section 4.f.) S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled.

Have an equivalent combination of the type and level of experience and education described above. Only graduate level education in excess of the 4.5 semesters may be combined with experience.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. Physical Demands:
Some work of the position takes place mostly in an office or laboratory setting. No special physical effort is required. Field work may require the use of proper personal protective gear, working in dusty, hot, humid, and extreme cold environments, occasional off-road driving of 4-wheel drive vehicles. Lifting of equipment and objects weighing up to 50 pounds may be necessary.

Work Environment:
Some work takes place in an office or laboratory setting with adequate heat, light, and ventilation. Office conditions do not require special safety precautions; field conditions may include extreme heat or cold, rain or snow, and hazardous conditions such as exposure to extreme temperature, noxious or toxic gasses, ice or flooding.

Education

This position has a positive education requirement which requires that you:
A) Have a degree in geology, plus 20 additional semester hours in any combination of mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological science, structural, chemical, civil, mining or petroleum engineering, computer science, planetary geology, comparative planetology, geophysics, meteorology, hydrology, oceanography, physical geography, marine geology, and cartography.

B) Combination of education and experience -- course work as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Salary for Vernal, Utah including special salary rate ranges from $51,979 to $67,568.
