  • The duties described are for the full-performance level. At developmental grade levels, assignments will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity.
  • The duties may include, but are not limited to:
  • Providing assistance to higher level administrative and professional staff by performing administrative work as assigned. In some situations the incumbent will recommend ways to improve processes.
  • Performing a full range of clerical assignments which will vary by Division involving unrelated steps, processes and methods.
  • Using agency systems for purposes such as correspondence, web content development, web content management, reports, performance contracts, permits, manuals, timekeeping, completion of travel documents, and other administrative functions.
  • Performing a variety of tasks such as validating and processing documents, assembling information, inputting information into systems, preparing reports, gathering current data, tracking and reporting on status of assignments, etc.
  • Scheduling appointments and makes meeting arrangements in accordance with instructions from the supervisor.
  • Receiving and filing correspondence, records, reports, and other materials.

  • Successful completion of two-year trial period.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement.

ELIGIBILITY: Students who are currently enrolled or accepted for enrollment on at least a half-time basis at a qualifying educational institution in a certificate, degree, or diploma program.

Applicants can qualify by meeting the EDUCATION requirements specified below.

EDUCATION:
GS-3: Completion of 1 full academic year of post-high school study.

  • An academic year of undergraduate education is defined as a minimum of 30 semester or 45 quarter hours at an accredited college or university; OR
  • A minimum of 36 weeks at an accredited business, technical, vocational, or qualifying educational institution for at least 20 classroom hours per week.

Education

Upon graduation, you must meet the following education requirement to be eligible for conversion to a position in the GS-0303-5/6/7 Miscellaneous Clerk and Assistant series:

GS-5: Four years above high school or One year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-04 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors.

What Does the Daniel E. Salmon Internship Program Offer You? Employment while attending school: A minimum of 640 hours of paid employment during the course of your Internship for Pathways work requirements. The work requirements must be completed prior to, or concurrent with, the completion of Daniel E. Salmon Internship educational requirements, to be considered for possible conversion, without further competition, to a permanent appointment with APHIS upon successful completion of degree, training, and other work requirements.

Promotion Potential: If you are selected for a position with further promotion potential, you will be placed under a career development plan, and may be non-competitively promoted if you successfully complete the requirements and if recommended by management. However, promotion is neither implied nor guaranteed.

Housing and travel expenses will not be paid.

This Internship confers eligibility for a noncompetitive conversion to a permanent or term position in the competitive service contingent upon meeting all applicable Internship Program requirements and the needs of the agency. You will be considered for conversion to a permanent or term position upon the successful completion of your Internship. However, please note that eligibility for conversion does not guarantee the agency will opt for conversion. The target position for this internship is GS-0303-5/6/7; however, in most cases, conversion will be at the GS-05 grade level.

If selected, official transcripts will be required prior to entrance on duty. Proof of enrollment or acceptance for the upcoming academic term or semester will also be required unless graduating in the current semester.

A Pathways Participant Agreement will be required if you are selected for a position. The agreement must be signed by all applicable parties prior to entrance on duty.

Student Interns must continue to meet the Pathways Program requirements throughout the duration of the appointment. Incumbents will be required to provide proof of continued enrollment and good standing each semester or grading period throughout the internship program. Failure to do so will result in termination of the appointment.

Worksite Information: This position may be eligible to telework up to four days per week, based upon the duties of the position. This position may also be eligible for flexible work arrangements as determined by agency policy and any applicable collective bargaining agreements.
