Summary

The Lead MST works in support of the Sterile Processing Service (SPS) management team. Revises work schedules to meet anticipated and unanticipated changes in the workload. Assigns work to staff based on experience and training needs. Monitors and reports on the status of work.

Duties

Help

  • Provides initial orientation and a continuing on the job training for new and established SPS employees.
  • Develops, monitors, and revises SPS education programs for transportation, decontamination, preparation/assembly, sterilization/disinfection, distribution, and storage of reusable medical equipment for the medical center.
  • Develops and provides training to employees to fully comply with provisions of safety regulations and infection control procedures and principles.
  • Identifies the training needs of SPS employees, develops training plans, and arrange training to meet the needs of employees.
  • Creates learning plans that meet the needs of individual and specific groups. Evaluates and documents results of learning activities. Participates in tracking and trending educational data.
  • Develops instructional plans and training based on established learning objectives and requirements that are provided in the manufacturer's instructions, VHA directives and memorandums.
  • Evaluates employee competency on proper procedures and methods based on department and hospital polices.
  • Evaluates the employee compliance with established Standard Operating Procedures (SOP). This includes posting and maintaining current documents of SOP, Competencies and Information for Use (IFU) documents on a regular basis.
  • Develops, monitors, and revises SPS educational programs for both new and existing employees.
  • Knowledgeable of the processes for Reusable Medical Equipment (RME) as required by this position.
  • Maintain current knowledge of the Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) which document the processes and procedures for cleaning, disinfection, sterilization and preparation of RME appropriate to this position.
  • Must demonstrate their ability to utilize an acceptable proficiency in the use of RME appropriate to this position.
Occasional Travel: This position may offer occasional travel away from the duty station to assist with Community-Based Outpatient Clinic (CBOC) support during periods of required coverage. In addition, this position may be selected to attend VHA sponsored educational training or certification courses.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency. Medical Supply Technicians must be proficient in spoken and written English in accordance with chapter 3, section A, paragraph 3j, part II.
  • Experience and/or Education
    • Experience: Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work; or
    • Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or
    • Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.
Grade Determinations: The following criteria must be met when determining the grade of candidates.

GS-07, Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) - Trainer Experience: One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade level.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
  1. Knowledge of SPS and Infection Prevention regulations.
  2. Knowledge of procedures and/or operations in training developed for, and operations of SPS functions for both new and existing staff.
  3. Ability to manage integrated training programs as it relates to sterile processing procedures.
  4. Working knowledge of Microsoft Word, Excel or other software programs in order to complete reports and develop skills.
  5. Ability to communicate effectively with staff and management officials in regards to sterile processing procedures.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-07

Physical Requirements: This work is performed in various settings: decontamination, preparation, clean sterile supply (preparation) and in other services and departments throughout the medical facility/campus. The incumbent may be required to work in areas that are hot, cold, drafty and poorly lighted. The employee is subject to the possibility of falls, scrapes, cuts, bruises, and other injuries from material handling equipment. The work requires standing and walking during the entire workday and frequent bending and lifting of packages (occasionally weighing as much as 50 pounds). The work requires dexterity and visual acuity for manipulating, disassembly and assembly of instrumentation.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
