Summary

The Supervisory Medical Supply Technician functions as a first-level supervisor responsible for the oversight of a group of medical Supply Technicians, with administrative responsibility for planning and directing of the work. Provides technical supervisory necessary for accomplishing the work of the organizational unit, and carry out other duties as assigned by the Chief of Sterile Processing Service.

Help

The duties of the Supervisory Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing) includes but is not limited to:

  • Responsible for the direct supervision of day-to-day operations in Sterile Processing Services.
  • Oversees the quality assurance program in daily practice to ensure that the correct medical instrument is available.
  • Responsible for operational deployment of a comprehensive training program for all Sterile Processing Services staff.
  • Communicates with customers to ensure uninterrupted and accurate flow of necessary reusable medical equipment (RME) supplies for procedures.
  • Plans and schedules work to be accomplished by subordinates based on priorities and competencies; establishes and adjusts short term priorities.
  • Participates in Interview Panels and makes recommendations regarding hiring decisions.
  • Provides recommendations regarding promotion and advancement of the Medical Supply Technicians on respective shifts.
  • Resolves complaints from employees; refers grievances and serious issues to a higher-level supervisor or manager.
  • Identifies developmental and training needs of employees; develops of performance standards.
  • Provides advice and counsel to workers related to technical work and administrative matters.
  • Provides training to subordinates to fully comply with provisions of safety regulations.
  • Makes operational decisions based upon findings and/or observations presented by subordinate technicians.
  • Orients new employees to their duties and validates competencies of employees

Work Schedule: Monday-Friday (7:30am-4:00pm, or 3:30pm-12:00am, or 12:00am-8:00pm) with ROTATING WEEKENDS

Qualifications

Applicants pending the completion of educational or certification/licensure requirements may be referred and tentatively selected but may not be hired until all requirements are met.

Basic Requirements:

  • United States Citizenship: Non-citizens may only be appointed when it is not possible to recruit qualified citizens in accordance with VA Policy.
  • English Language Proficiency: Candidates must be proficient in spoken and written English to be appointed as authorized by 38 U.S.C. § 7403(f).
  • Experience and/or Education: Experience. Six months of experience that demonstrates the applicant's ability to perform the work or provides an understanding of the work;
OR
  • Education. One year above high school that included at least 6 semester hours in health care related courses such as sterile processing, nursing assistant, hospital corpsman, and operating room and surgical technician courses or other courses related to the position; or (c) Experience/Education Combination. Equivalent combination of experience and education are qualifying for entry level for which both education and experience are acceptable.

May qualify based on being covered by the Grandfathering Provision as described in the VA Qualification Standard for this occupation (only applicable to current VHA employees who are in this occupation and meet the criteria).

Grade Determinations:
GS-08 Supervisory Medical Supply Technician (Sterile Processing)Experience. One year of experience equivalent to the next lower grade (GS-7) level. These are: Ability to instruct staff on the correct procedures and protocols for completing assignments; Skill in communicating with staff to ensure compliance with written directives, rules and regulations; Skill in interpersonal relationships in dealing with employees, team leaders, and managers; Knowledge of sterility principles in order to instruct staff on decontamination procedures; Ability to lead individuals, manage priorities, and schedule work assignments.

Demonstrated Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities. In addition to the experience above, the candidate must demonstrate the following KSAs:
1. Ability to manage, interact and deal with individuals of varying backgrounds.
2. Ability to direct staff and manage tasks to be completed.
3. Ability to oversee and supervise all aspects of decontamination, preparation, sterilization, monitoring, and distribution of RME.
4. Ability to perform a full range of supervisory duties, including assigning, planning and evaluating work, recommending awards, approving leave, identifying training needs, and resolving staff issues.

Preferred Experience: National Certification by the Certification Board of Sterile Processing and Distribution (CBSPD) and/or by the Healthcare Sterile Processing Association (HSPA, formerly IAHCSMM) is preferred but not required.

The full performance level of this vacancy is GS-08.

Physical Requirements: This position may require shift work and or rotation of tour assignments. Routinely requires heavy lifting (45 lbs. and over), heavy carrying (45 lbs. and over), straight pulling and pushing (up to 8 hrs.), walking (8 hrs.), standing (8 hrs.), kneeling (8 hrs.), repeated bending (8 hrs.), both legs required, near vision correctable at 13" to 16" to Jaeger 1 to 4, far vision correctable in one eye to 20/20, depth perception, ability to distinguish colors, ability to distinguish shades of colors, hearing aid permitted, and ability to operate transportation equipment.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee.
