Duties

Help

As a Epidemiologist, you will:

  • Serves as a recognized expert in epidemiology for the agency with responsibility for developing policy and objectives, appraising programs, and initiating requirements for epidemiological studies. Assignments are of such breadth as to cover complex problems in public health issues, and/or research, development, and evaluations.
  • Oversees contracts, grants, awards or cooperative agreements with full responsibility for carrying out all required monitoring and management duties. Serves as technical consultant on contracts for scientific services. Performs duties such as: writes statements of work, serves on technical review panels for contract proposals, and monitors contracts for quality assurance and quality control. Writes recommendations for each negotiation. Participates in negotiations on the type and amount of assistance provided to contractors and cooperative agreement participants. Provides technical advice and assistance in the development of criteria and standards for the planning, implementation, and evaluation of contract, grant, and/or cooperative agreement proposals. Provides advice and assistance for the development of contracts, grants, or cooperative agreements for professional, laboratory, or other services pertinent to the program, project, or study.
  • Designs, plans, and initiates epidemiologic studies, surveys, and investigations. Participates in various aspects of the study or survey design process, including conducting a search or review of the existing literature and data in a specialty area, and preparing and/or presenting summaries for a variety of purposes. Monitors internal
  • review board clearances and designs questionnaires and other data collection instruments. Identifies and analyzes public health issues and their impact on public policies or epidemiological studies or surveys.
  • Serves as a national or internationally recognized consultant and expert on epidemiological issues on critical problems in the field of epidemiology. Evaluates data collection, quality control, and data utilization methods used to study epidemiological problems and issues. Identifies or develops appropriate intervention methods to identify, treat or resolve various medical issues or problems. Consults on technical problems with solutions that do not conform to established protocols and require the modification of approaches or applications in a specialty area. Provides epidemiological advice and/or assistance in the resolution of technical problems and/or issues that include significant barriers to program or project delivery. Provides consultative services on large and difficult programs or projects that have unusually demanding technical problems or issues.
  • Serves as a project coordinator and recommends resources for epidemiologic projects. Reviews and approves the substance of reports, decisions, case documents, contracts, or other action documents to ensure that policies accurately reflect the position of the organization and the views of the agency.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications: Bachelor's or graduate/higher level degree: Major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (http://ope.ed.gov/accreditation/)

Minimum Qualifications: Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 in the Federal service as defined in the next paragraph.

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position to include providing consultation and technical assistance in coordinating and conducting epidemiologic studies and intervention projects that include research, evaluation, and surveillance of interventions/strategies related to health status and health outcomes of public health prevention and control programs.


Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Education completed in colleges or universities outside the United States may be used to meet the education requirements. You must provide acceptable documentation that the foreign education is comparable to that received in an accredited educational institution in the United States.
