Duties

Help

This position provides support to both civilian and military personnel with permanent change of duty station moves. The purpose of the position is to provide counsel and assistance and assure timely, economical and procedurally correct preparation of documents to authorize and process transportation services.

Being a Coast Guard civilian makes you a valuable member of the Coast Guard team.

Typical work assignments include: 

  • Serving as a shipment assistant and authority providing complete counseling service to effect the shipment of household goods, personal effects, mobile homes, boat/trailers, POV's (Privately owned vehicles), Do-It Yourself moves, freight rates, for DHS/DOD military, civilian and their dependents.
  • Interviewing applicants individually or in groups to determine the needs and develop the correct combination of entitlements.
  • Researching and analyzing documents and regulations to determine pre-shipment, shipment, and post-shipment needs and services.
  • Routing and booking shipments in the the database.
  • Preparing reports and relies to telephonic and written communications regarding shipping information on all inbound and outbound shipments, and tracer actions.
  • Consolidating, rearranging, modifying and retrieving records stored in database.
  • Reviewing computerized monthly and quarterly billings to ensure that all transactions during the period are reflected and accurately.
  • Managing Government Travel Debit Card program.

Qualifications

Qualifications for GS-07:  Applicants must have at least one year of specialized work experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 level in the Federal Service.  Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.   Examples include:  Determining and advising on entitlements or procedures, such as-- storage entitlements, movers' liabilities, and prohibited items, the various methods of movement (e.g., Government, "do-it-yourself, or commuted rate, and the paperwork necessary to document moves and substantiate claims for reimbursement of expenses or damage to goods.  Arranging for the movement of special items, such as mobile homes, house trailers, campers, and large boats. Routing and booking shipments in an automated computer system and consolidating, rearranging, modifying, or retrieving records stored in automated database.

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
