Duties

Help
  • May function as rod person on land surveys that require specific rodding and leveling procedures, and uses various types of rods.
  • In accordance with established procedures, selects the measuring or turning point according to the terrain and demands of the type of survey involved.
  • Is designated as pacer of a leveling party. Proceeds ahead of the party to determine positions the rod crew will occupy so that observations will be balanced and instruments kept level.
  • May function as head of the measuring crew on routine, repetitive surveys.
  • Using established methods and procedures, selects measuring points by considering terrain, necessity of balancing observations, and demands of the type of survey and equipment involved.
  • Independently carries through a sequence of standard operations, directing the work of other crew members.
  • May measure slope distance, and convert to horizontal distance by using a variety of surveying instruments.
  • May function as target set-up person under a variety of standard conditions. Using a reconnaissance sketch, locates stations and orients positions.
  • Erects and levels survey targets, orients targets at observing stations, and adjusts the brightness, focus, and direction of targets according to directions from observers using radio or light signals.

Qualifications

In order to qualify, you must meet the eligibility and qualifications requirements as defined below by the closing date of the announcement. For more information on the qualifications for this position, visit the Office of Personnel Management's General Schedule Qualification Standards.

GS-03: Applicants must have six months of any type of work that demonstrated the ability to perform the work of the position, or experience that provided a familiarity with the subject matter or processes of the broad subject area of the occupation; OR one year of education above high school that included at least one course in surveying, engineering, industrial technology, construction, physics, drafting, forestry, geography, navigation, cartography, physical science, or mathematics; OR combinations of successfully completed post-high school education and experience; OR completion of an intensive, specialized course of study of less than one year at a technical school or through a military or government sponsored training program that was designed specifically as career preparation for the work of the position being filled . The education must have been obtained in an accredited business, technical school, junior college, college or university.

Examples of General Experience includes: Observed technical work, such as construction inspector or surveyor work. Performed general office duties, such as filing and maintaining simple records. Performed simple arithmetic computations. Other work experience paid or unpaid, that demonstrates an ability to learn and perform the work of this position. Examples of unpaid work include volunteer work, such as at a park, youth camp, scouting organization, hospital, community sports league, local fire department, etc.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
