Help

This position is being filled under the Pathways Internship Program. The program is designed to provide students enrolled in a wide variety of educational institutions, from high school to graduate level, with paid work opportunities in agencies to explore Federal careers while still in school. The Internship provides managers a ready source of student employees and potential permanent employees upon completion of the program requirements. It also provides the student with work experience directly related to the curriculum studies or career goals while offering eligibility for non-competitive conversion to permanent employment upon completion. -Set up screening stations with Thermal Imaging, Thermometer, PPE, Gloves and Sanitary Wipes.
-Incumbent may be assigned to any areas of the medical center to assist with telephonic, clerical administrative and receptions duties.
-Greets staff, volunteer and contractor in a pleasant and courteous manner.
-Ensure all staff, volunteer, and contractor have PIV affix as they enter the facility. Provides information and directions to Veterans, staff, volunteers and contractors. Assists with general wayfinding for patients and visitors.
-Reception and telephonic duties include receiving and directing callers and visitors. Is responsible for prompt, courteous telephone answering and message taking.
-The incumbent takes messages that are accurate and detailed. Attempts to clarify needs, provides direct answers and/or ensures that responses to callers are expedited. Also assists other staff in answering telephone calls as to reduce wait times.
-Obtains equipment and supplies.
-The incumbent would wipe down tables, counters and equipment. Provides basic wiping down of all high touch surfaces in surrounding areas.

Interns may be non-competitively converted to a term, career-conditional or career appointment within 120 days following successful completion of all of their educational and work experience requirements in accordance with 5 CFR 362.204. Conversion is not mandatory or guaranteed.

The Pathways Program participant will enter into a written Participant Agreement that clearly identifies expectations, a general description of duties, evaluation procedures, work schedules and minimum eligibility requirements for conversion to term or permanent positions in the competitive service.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/17/2022.

Internship Program: To be eligible, applicants must be accepted for enrollment or currently enrolled and seeking a degree (diploma, certificate, etc.) in a qualifying educational institution, on a full or half-time basis as defined by the institution in which you are enrolled. (Documentation Required)

You may qualify based on education and/or experience as described below:

  • General Experience: Must possess at least 3 months (13 weeks) of general experience which is defined as progressively responsible clerical, office, or other work that indicates ability to acquire the particular knowledge and skills needed to perform the duties of the position to be filled. General experience is experience creditable at grade levels GS-2 through GS-4 where the knowledge, skills and competencies needed to perform the duties of a position are not essential, but where an applicant can demonstrate in his or her past experience the ability to acquire the particular knowledge, skills and competencies. When determining general experience requirements, the requirements may vary based on the position, but in general the experience provides an applicant with or familiarity with certain knowledge, skills, and competencies related to the position. OR,
  • Education: Applicants may substitute education for the experience required. To qualify based on education for this grade level you must have a completion of high school or GED diploma. (TRANSCRIPTS REQUIRED) OR,

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements: The work requires long periods of standing, with minor bending, lifting and pushing. The work also includes carrying different sizes and weights of items, using a keyboard and often simultaneously using a telephone, periods of standing as well as considerable walking, bending, stooping, stretching, lifting, moving of equipment. The work also requires agility and dexterity to handle papers, books, charts, boxes of copier paper and medical supplies.

You are excluded from health benefits coverage if you are expected to work less than 130 hours per month for at least 90 days.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
