Duties

Help
  • Manages the daily operations and support of all agency networks to include, configuring, installing, optimizing and securing all network transport devices and related technologies.
  • Responds to network issues and outages as they occur. Communicates with customers, subject matter experts, and vendors to resolve network issues and outages.
  • Expertise in network technologies, Transmission Control Protocol/Internet Protocol (TCP/IP), Virtual Local Area Network (VLAN), Virtual Private Network (VPN), Routing Protocols, 802.1x, and router operating systems such as the Cisco IOS, IOS-XE,
  • Provides leadership, guidance, and accountability for teams of IT specialists and contractors performing the installation, configuration, and maintenance of network equipment and other IT-related duties.
  • Maintains current awareness of emerging trends in network technologies and identifies those with potential application for agency networks.
  • Provides customers and management with prompt and accurate technical advice and guidance, recommendations to improve network operations and overall support.
  • Provides written and/or status reports on activities or system status, completed projects, research initiatives, technical issues found, and problem resolutions.

Qualifications

Time in Grade:
For entry at the GS-13 level, status applicants must have served 52 weeks as a GS-12 or equivalent or higher grade, in the Federal Service.

Basic Education Requirements:
For GS-12 and above: Experience that demonstrated accomplishment of computer project assignments that required a wide range of knowledge of computer requirements and techniques pertinent to the position to be filled. This knowledge is generally demonstrated by assignments where the applicant analyzed a number of alternative approaches in the process of advising management concerning major aspects of ADP system design, such as what system interrelationships must be considered, or what operating mode, system software, and/or equipment configuration is most appropriate for a given project.

Specialized Experience Definition:
Specialized Experience for this position consists of having one year (52 weeks) of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level or pay band in the Federal service. Specialized Experience is defined as: Demonstrated experience performing duties in the field of Information Technology including expert knowledge and experience with WAN, LAN network design and topologies, VLAN architecture and routing protocols; knowledge of established IT security techniques, procedures, and polices; application of IT security principles, concepts, methods, standards and practices to develop and interpret policies and strategies governing the operation of information systems and networks; recommending best practices, plans and policies to improve incident response and coordination; providing expert advice concerning improved network solutions and IT risk management; and expert communicator, both verbal and written, and able to prepare and brief professional quality presentations.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience.
