As a Photographer within the Collection Care and Management Department, Photo Services Office, the Collection Care and Management Department is responsible for the safeguarding and proper documentation of all works of art at the Museum, whether from the Hirshhorn's permanent collection or on loan from other institutions. The incumbent, reporting to the Digital Asset Manager, provides photographic services for all Museum departments.

Typical duties: 

  • Complete demanding and aesthetically challenging photographic assignments, requiring considerable technical skill and expertise, and evaluates the technical requirements of each project, selecting and operating cameras for each assignment and the proper supporting equipment to produce final images that meet rigid museum standards of quality.
  • Arrange and light objects to emphasize an object’s most important features; eliminates glare and the reflective properties of object surface with appropriate filters; renders fine details or exact color renditions using specialized lighting techniques; and ensures accurate color representation between the image captured and the object photographed.
  • Create museum-quality digital images and scans traditional photographic media for any image or work they create; manages the lifecycle of the digital assets, providing digital files, color match prints, and proofs in a variety of formats.
  • Manage the daily operations of the Photo Services Office, including developing short- and long-range plans and budgets, and acts as a Museum expert on digital imaging technology.

Qualifications

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system.  For this position Specialized experience is defined as providing all necessary imaging for visual support of a museum or cultural institution; photographing museum objects, exhibits, lectures, performances, special events and high-profile visitors; creating high quality images using professional digital cameras, lighting equipment and photo editing software; and participating in the management of day-to-day operations of a photography studio.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Applicants for this position may be evaluated in multiple stages. The first stage is an evaluation of your responses to the online multiple-choice questions that assess your experience, education, and/or training for the job related competencies below:

  1. Expert knowledge of the methods of photographic modern and contemporary art objects to produce images of high artistic merit that visually communicate the characteristics and details of the object, achieve museum standards for the photography of art objects, and meet the special requirements of the project.
  2. Ability to evaluate the technical requirements of photography projects, make compensating adjustments in equipment and lighting techniques to determine how best to handle issues to produce photographs that show the highest professional skills and overall picture quality.
  3. Expert ability to operate digital imaging equipment to create accurate color proofs and presentation prints, and to prepare electronic images using a variety of platforms.
  4. Ability to manage the daily operations of a photography studio that supports research, educational, and programmatic initiatives, including preparing budgets for the purchase of equipment, and conducting equipment and material inventories.

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

  • Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.
  • Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.
  • Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
