This vacancy is a solicitation for a Hiring Fair Event, which will be on an invite only basis once the position qualifications have been met. If you receive an invitation, you will be required to attend in person on:

  • Date: October 22, 2022
  • Time: 8:00AM. - 3:00PM.
  • Location of Hiring Event: VA Outpatient Clinic, 32nd Street - (Address and map of hiring fair location will be provided to candidates who have met minimum qualifications for invitation)

You will be notified of your qualifications and if determined to be minimally qualified, you will receive an invitation for interview and MUST RSVP no later than 10/17/2022. Applicants should plan for a long day if selected, as there are several pre-employment stations to clear.

Duties include but are not limited to:

The housekeeping aids who maintain VA facilities for Veterans and their families are essential to the patient care experience at the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). A VA healthcare career as a housekeeping aide means working alongside other Veterans, who make up 85 percent of the housekeeping staff.

As a Housekeeping Aid, you will perform a full range of light and heavy cleaning duties and routine housekeeping duties. Veterans rely on the skills of these professionals to keep patient areas clean and safe by addressing spills quickly, discarding trash, installing light bulbs in halls and rooms, and vacuuming and polishing floors.

Duties include cleaning wards, patient rooms, storerooms, offices, corridors, restrooms, shower rooms, and other areas.

Housekeeping Aids sweep, mop, scrub (machine) floors, vacuum carpets and upholstered furniture, empty waste baskets, clean light globes and Venetian blinds, wash walls, windows and ceilings by climbing small ladders, refill toilet tissue and towel dispensers and move furniture. Housekeeping Aids carry out assignments with minimal supervision.


Work Schedule: Sunday through Saturday - 40 hours a week with a Rotating Schedule that may include weekends, holidays, days, evenings, and nights.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements by the closing date of this announcement, 10/12/2022.

EXPERIENCE: A specific length of training and experience is not required, but you must show evidence of training or experience of sufficient scope and quality of your ability to do the work of this position. Evidence which demonstrates you possess the knowledge, skills, and ability to perform the duties of this position must be supported by detailed descriptions of such on your resume. Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standards.

SCREEN-OUT ELEMENT: Your qualifications will first be evaluated against the prescribed screen out element, which usually appears as question 1 in the on-line questionnaire. Those applicants who appear to possess at least the minimal acceptable qualification requirement are considered for further rating; those who do not are rated ineligible and are eliminated. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religions; spiritual; community; student; social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Note: A full year of work is considered to be 35-40 hours of work per week. Part-time experience will be credited on the basis of time actually spent in appropriate activities. Applicants wishing to receive credit for such experience must indicate clearly the nature of their duties and responsibilities in each position and the number of hours a week spent in such employment.

Physical Requirements/Working Conditions:
The physical demands of the position require some heavy lifting (equipment and materials), movement of furniture are required along with the stamina to perform physical labor. Continuous walking, standing, stooping, bending, lifting and arduous physical effort is required in the performance of the manual tasks described; such as washing walls above five feet and operating powered equipment over extended periods of time. Incumbent may routinely move and/or lift objects in excess of fifty (50) pounds and push linen carts in excess of 400 pounds. He/she will be required climb stepper ladders. Equipment utilized to accomplish duties and tasks require special care while operating to avoid serious injury.

Incumbent working conditions such as ventilation and environment are satisfactory. His/her primary duties are normally accomplished indoors in a well-lighted and climate controlled atmosphere (with some exposure to the outside). He/she may occasionally encounter temperature extremes, dirty, dusty, drafty, and noisy working conditions. Incumbent is exposed to communicable pathogens, skin irritations, mechanical and/or electrical hazards. When performing cleaning tasks, moderated effort is expended. Must have a thorough knowledge of specialized cleaning and sanitation techniques, materials and equipment in order to accomplish the duties assigned this position. While performing snow removal, will be exposed to the cold and wind outdoors for prolonged periods of time.

Receiving Service Credit or Earning Annual (Vacation) Leave: Federal Employees earn annual leave at a rate (4, 6 or 8 hours per pay period) which is based on the number of years they have served as a Federal employee. Selected applicants may qualify for credit toward annual leave accrual, based on prior work experience or military service experience. This credited service can be used in determining the rate at which they earn annual leave. Such credit must be requested and approved prior to the appointment date and is not guaranteed.
