As a Wildlife Biologist within the Western Ecological Research Center, some of your specific duties will include:
Participates in the planning and execution of complex studies and investigations concerning biological, chemical, and physical processes that affect marine ecosystems.
Conducts field work pertaining to seabirds to accomplish objectives of wildlife projects.
Gathers, organizes, and interprets a wide variety of biological, ecological, pathological, public use data or other information pertinent to scientific studies or investigations.
Performs data analysis and writes reports to evaluate findings.
Drafts sections of reports that include minor recommendation for changes, elimination, or improvement of operations and program plans.
Operates a government owned or leased vehicle as an incidental driver.
Operates a small watercraft motorboat vehicle.
Conditions of Employment as required by the USGS Watercraft Safety Program:
Must be able to take and pass the Motorboat Operator Certification Course (MOCC) within 6 months of employment.
Must be able to obtain and maintain First Aid and CPR (Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation for the duration of employment.
Physical Demands:
The work requires some physical exertion such as walking over wet, rough, uneven, or rocky surfaces; bending, crouching, stooping, stretching, reaching, or similar activities. The work requires moderate physical ability and average agility and dexterity.
Work Environment:
Work is performed in an office, laboratory, and/or in the field. The office is adequately lighted, heated, and ventilated. Temperature and weather extremes may be encountered in the performance of the outdoor work. Field and laboratory duties may require the use of special protective gear. The incumbent is expected to conduct duties in a safe and orderly manner so as not to endanger self, fellow workers, or property with which entrusted.

Selectee must provide a valid state driver's license & safe driving record.

Qualifications
BASICEDUCATIONREQUIREMENT: Applicants must meet A or B below to satisfy the basic education requirement for Wildlife Biologist, all grade levels.
A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in biological science that included:
at least 9 semester hours in such wildlife subjects as mammalogy, ornithology, animal ecology, wildlife management, or research course in the field of wildlife biology; and
at least 12 semester hours in zoology in such subjects as general zoology, invertebrate zoology, vertebrate zoology, comparative anatomy, physiology, genetics, ecology, cellular biology, parasitology, entomology, or research courses in such subjects (Excess courses in wildlife biology may be used to meet the zoology requirements where appropriate.); and
at least 9 semester hours in botany or the related plant sciences.
** OR
B. Combination of education and experience-equivalent to a major in biological science (i.e., at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent), with at least:
9 semester hours or the equivalent in wildlife subjects,
12 semester hours or the equivalent in zoology, and
9 semester hours or the equivalent in botany or related plant science, as shown in "A" above, plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years.

For GS-09:
In addition to the basic education requirement stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-09 level:
**Master's or equivalent graduate degree in wildlife biology or other directly related field of study or 2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education (36 semester hours, 54 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a master's degree in wildlife biology or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of the position to be filled.
**OR one year of appropriate professional experience in wildlife biology that is equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service
Examples of GS-07 level work may include: 1) assisting with planning, organizing, and implementing wildlife scientific investigations; 2) performing data analyses on portions of larger wildlife scientific investigations; 3) participating in gathering, organizing, and interpreting biological, ecological, pathological, public use, or other information pertinent to wildlife research studies and/or scientific investigations. For examples 1-3, the work involved following established methods and procedures, or detailed instructions; using some judgment in applying basic principles and procedures; solving minor problems and making routine decisions.
