The Supervisory Museum Specialist (General) is responsible for the management and coordination of NPG’s on-site and traveling exhibitions, permanent collection installations, outgoing loans and other special projects, including activities spanning multiple NPG departments and interactions with other Smithsonian offices, outside institutions and private individuals.

In this position, you will:

  • Supervise the Exhibitions department staff, monitors performance of contractors, guest curators, research assistants, interns, and volunteers.  Plan work to be accomplished by subordinates. Set and adjust short-term priorities and prepare schedules for completion of work. Assign work to subordinates based on priorities, selective consideration of the difficulty and requirements of assignments and employee capabilities. Develop performance standards and uses them to evaluate work performance of subordinates.
  • Manage all NPG exhibition projects, including the development and tracking of exhibition checklists. They review and oversee routing of all exhibition texts and didactic content. Coordinate the review, routing, and editing of exhibition titles, texts, labels, catalogues, and summative ephemera to achieve publication and graphic material production deadlines. Oversee videography of exhibitions and coordinate with the New Media department to upload videos to NPG website and other digital media platforms.
  • Assist their supervisor in the solicitation to potential venues for NPG traveling exhibitions, to include the preparation of tour marketing materials, presentations to and correspondence with other museum senior leaders, and negotiations of dates and fees. Create tour budgets, checklists, and other deliverables, consolidating input from NPG, Smithsonian, and external stakeholders into a final tour plan.
  • Manage the collection of tour venues’ final reports and other materials required by institutions and individuals lending artwork to the tour. Maintain an archive of all correspondence for touring exhibitions.
  • Participate in the outgoing loans approval process, respond to requests, and coordinate any special needs for removal and replacement of works on view to accommodate loans. Coordinate with NPG curators and registrars, and as needed the Smithsonian Office of Government Relations for loan requests of high-ranking officials.
  • Manage the NPG Audio-Visual Special Collection, overseeing acquisition and cataloguing of special collection assets into The Museum System (TMS) as well as ingesting of digital media to the digital asset management system (DAMS). Coordinate internal stakeholders on planning for delivery and archiving of new media assets. Oversee development and update of acquisitions procedures and public access to media resources for scholarly and noncommercial uses.

Qualifications

Basic Qualifications:

Experience related to the operation or management of a museum or similar collection of valuable objects. Examples of qualifying specialized experience include collections management, registration, cataloging, research, preservation, restoration, or conservation of collections of museum material, or other experience related to the position to be filled.  Most positions require a particular subject-matter specialization, e.g., aeronautics, anthropology, art, geology, history, natural science, technology, biology, or zoology.

In addition to the basic qualification requirement above:

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position specialized experience is defined as: Demonstrated experience in the management and coordination of on-site and traveling exhibitions, permanent collection installations, outgoing loans, and other special projects and the tracking of exhibition checklists, budgets, and maintaining a multi-year exhibition schedule.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Qualification requirements, including one year time-in-grade at the next lower grade level for promotion candidates, must be met within 30 days of the job announcement closing date.
