Duties

Help

The Marine Machinery Mechanic (Various Trades), duties include:

  • Responsible for operating inboard and outboard boats up to 50 ft. in length.
  • Responsible for working on marine gasoline and diesel engines to include the installing, repairing, maintaining, troubleshooting and testing of marine engines.
  • Responsible for working on marine electronics to include installing, repairing, maintaining, troubleshooting and testing of marine electronics.
  • Responsible for computer research and procurement of equipment and parts.

The position is ideal for a highly motivated, experienced professional who has experience maintaining and repairing equipment found in a waterfront environment.

Qualifications

Qualifications for the position are based on the  training, experience, or other requirements that determine which applicants would be able to perform satisfactorily in the position to be filled.

To qualify for the Wage Grade 10, you must have the ability to perform as an Marine Machinery Mechanic (Various Trades), the following:

  • The ability to do the work of a Marine Machinery Mechanic (Various Trades) without more than normal supervision.

BARGAINING UNIT: This is a Bargaining unit position represented by AFGE, local 2116.

PHYSICAL EFFORT: Physical efforts related to waterfront activities involve a range of the nature, degree, frequency, and duration of muscular effort or physical strain or hazards encountered. There is physical exertion related to actions such as lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects of varying weights, sizes, and shapes. Lifts light to heavy items up to 50 pounds, seeks weight lifting assistance on heavier items. There are bodily strains related to lack of movement such as standing in place, crouching, or stooping for extended periods of time. At times, work is performed in tiring positions and close quarters. You will work in such positions as kneeling, stooping, standing, squatting, reaching, lifting, walking, climbing, crawling, bending, etc. You must be able to concentrate for long periods of time when reassembling components and units and when studying manuals and diagrams. Must be when testing equipment, when operating power tools, and maintain general awareness of moving equipment around the waterfront.

WORKING CONDITIONS: There are distinctive hazards, physical hardships, and working conditions associated with boats, vessels, and waterfront activities. Working conditions vary in such ways such as the nature of the work environment; the extent to which it includes unpleasant, disagreeable, or hazardous conditions; the degree to which such conditions are experienced; the frequency and duration of exposure; the adequacy of protective clothing and gear, safety devices, and safe trade practices; and the possible effects on the employee. Inside lighting, heating, and ventilation in work areas is considered adequate but may be subject to less than ideal conditions. Repairs onboard boats and vessels often involve cramped quarters with limited space to work. Weather conditions to which exposed when working outdoors can range from very cold to very hot, foul weather gear may be required. Dust, grease, and soiling of clothing and skin surfaces are encountered. Noise and vibration are present as well as gases and fumes that may require gas-free certification. There are hazards related to slippery surfaces both outside and inside. You will be required to wear safety shoes or boots at all times and shall be required to wear a floatation coat or work vest whenever working underway, afloat, over side, or during inclement weather. When working near machine and woodworking tools, you will wear protective clothing and eye protection at all times. When working near noise hazards, you will wear hearing protection at all times. When working with hazardous materials or painting materials, you will wear protective clothing, eye protection, and breathing apparatus at all times. Wear appropriate eye protection and clothing for welding work. Use appropriate safety gear and safety procedures at all times that are suitable to the work performed.
