As a Hydrologist within the MD/DE/DC Water Science Center , some of your specific duties will include:
Prepares reports of findings for assigned parts of interpretive studies summarizing the results of hydrologic investigations. Hydrologic investigations involve the fate and transport of contaminants in the soil, groundwater and surface water. Findings are presented in reports, journals, data releases, and oral presentations.
Collects and analyzes hydrologic data, including groundwater levels, water-quality parameters, and samples of soil, groundwater, pore-water, and soil gas. Samples may be analyzed for geochemical or microbial characterization. Analysis and interpretation contribute to understanding the impacts of microbial communities on water quality.
Conceives new approaches or modifies existing methods of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting hydrologic information. Methods may include collecting environmental samples in soil, streambeds, wetlands and groundwater.
Maintains an awareness of the latest state-of-the-art techniques, instrumentation, and technology applicable to the conduct of hydrologic studies and data collection/analysis activities. Applies these technologies in the conduct of hydrologic studies.
Serves as a Project Chief for studies that are more conventional or limited in nature. Studies involve the investigation of water-quality contaminants in the environment, and may include field investigations and lab experiments.
Physical Demand: The work is typically performed in an office setting with no special physical demands. However, work may also be performed in the field which involves periods of walking, bending, climbing, or driving motor vehicles to worksites. The work may also involve some overnight travel for training, meetings, and site visits.
Work Environment: The work is usually performed in an office setting. However, work time may also be spent periodically visiting field sites. Field site visits are typically performed in either an outdoor setting subject to weather changes, diverse terrain, and safety hazards associated with working around complex features and/or construction, or an industrial setting subject to noise, fumes, and moving machinery. Both setting may require the use of personal protective equipment. Safety precautions and protocols are observed at all times and the scientist complies with safety by promptly reporting unsafe instructions and regulations and ensures individual and others safety by promptly reporting unsafe acts, unsafe conditions, and accidents to the supervisor.

Qualification Requirements

A. Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a bachelor's or higher degree in physical or natural science, or engineering that included at least 30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses in hydrology, the physical sciences, geophysics, chemistry, engineering science, soils, mathematics, aquatic biology, atmospheric science, meteorology, geology, oceanography, or the management or conservation of water resources. The course work must have included at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics.
OR
B. A combination of education and experience-course work as shown in "A" above (30 semester hours or the equivalent in any combination of courses as specified in "A" above which must include at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in calculus (including both differential and integral calculus), and at least 6 semester hours or the equivalent in physics), plus appropriate experience and/or additional education for a total of 4 years. The education or combined education and experience must be comparable in type, scope and thoroughness to that acquired through successful completion of a 4-year course of study as described in "A" above. For the GS-09: In addition to the basic education requirement as stated above, applicants must meet one of the following to qualify for the GS-09 level:
2 years of progressively higher-level graduate education (36 semester hours, 54 quarter hours or the equivalent) leading to a master's degree in hydrology or other directly related field of study or master's or equivalent graduate degree in hydrology or other directly related field of study if it provided the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.
OR
One year of appropriate professional experience in hydrology that is equivalent to at least the GS-07 level in the Federal service.
Examples of such experience include performing a variety of observations, computations, compilations and analyses in assisting higher level Hydrologists in carrying out hydrologic assignments. This work experience would have involved following established methods and procedures, or detailed instructions; using some judgment in applying basic principles and procedures, and would have required a good general working knowledge of the principles and the theories of hydrology.
OR
A combination of successfully completed progressive graduate level education, as described above, that is beyond the first year of graduate study and professional experience, as described above.
