Specialized Experience Requirements: In order to be rated as qualified for this position, we must be able to determine that you meet the specialized experience requirement(s); please be sure to include this information in your resume. No assumptions will be made about your experience. To be creditable, this experience must have been equivalent in difficulty and complexity to the next lower grade of the position to be filled.
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
To qualify for the GS-09 grade level: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-07 is required. Examples of work experience include, but are not limited to: conducting cultural resource inventories and reporting in compliance with Section 106 and 110 of the National Historic Preservation Act, coordinating with interdisciplinary teams to provide input into planning documents in accordance with the National Environmental Policy Act, ensuring inventory and site data are entered, managed, and utilized in various geospatial databases.
To qualify for the GS-11 grade level: 1 year of specialized experience equivalent to GS-09 is required. Examples of work experience include, but are not limited to: implementing heritage resource management strategies in accordance with National Historic Preservation Act Section 106, 112, and other regulations; documenting, reporting, or determining the importance of archeological inventories, and/or historic mining resources; recommending strategies to mitigate/resolve heritage resource conflicts or controversial issues; coordinating with various tribal entities and diverse stakeholders to address the implementation/completion of agreements.
Substitution of Education for Experience: GS-09: Two years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree in archeology, cultural anthropology, or other directly-related discipline;

Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of graduate-level education and experience, as described above, may be used to qualify for this position. This combination must have equipped you with the necessary knowledge and/or experience to successfully perform the duties of this position. Combinations of experience and education must total at least 100%.
GS-11: Three years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree at an accredited college or university indirectly related fields. Course work must clearly provide applicants with the background of knowledge and skills necessary for successful job performance in the position to be filled. Combination of Education and Experience: Have a combination of education and experience as described above. Combinations of experience and education must total at least 100%.
Federal employees in the competitive service are also subject to the Time-In-Grade requirement in accordance with 5 CFR 300.604. Physical Demands: Field work routinely requires physical exertion such as long periods of standing or walking over rough, uneven, rocky surfaces or mountainous terrain; recurring bending, crouching, stooping or reaching; using hand tools such as shovels, trowels, or screening devices; and lifting of moderately heavy items such as equipment and samples.
Work Environment: The work regularly involves moderate risks or discomforts which may require special safety precautions, e.g., adverse weather conditions, hazardous driving conditions, irritating or occasionally hazardous chemicals; hostile wildlife; and travel in off-road vehicles. Incumbent will adhere to all safety rules and regulations as prescribed in manuals/supplements or by the designated Safety Officer.
Basic Education Requirement:A. Degree that included three (3) semester hours each in the following course areas: 1) History of archeology; 2) Archeology of a major geographical area such as North America or Africa; 3) Regional archeology, archeological cultures, or sites in a specific part or portion of a major geographical area to acquire or develop a foundation for regional specialization for professional development; 4) Theory and methods of archeology. Methods include, but are not limited to, typology, classification, sampling, cultural evolution, diffusion, dating, and analytical techniques; and 5) Archeological field school, to provide a basic understanding of theoretical and practical approaches to research design implementation, field preservation techniques, and report preparation by participation in actual field work; -AND- Six (6) semester hours of related course work in: geography, geology, or cultural geography; history, historiography, or historical archeology; environmental studies; scientific writing (nonfiction English composition); and/or surveying;-AND- Archeological field school.

B. Related Curriculum: Degree in anthropology (with emphasis on ethnology, physical anthropology, or scientific linguistics), history, American studies, or a related discipline may be accepted as satisfying in full the educational requirements, provided the curriculum supplied academic course work sufficiently similar to the requirements in A above -AND- Archeological field school.

C. Combination of Education and Experience: College-level education or training that provided knowledge equivalent to that described in A or B above, plus appropriate technical experience or additional education -AND- Archeological field school. When combining education with experience, first determine your total qualifying education as a percentage of the education required for the grade level; then determine the your experience as a percentage of the experience required for the grade level; finally, add the two percentages. The total percentage must equal at least 100 percent to qualify this grade level.

D. Experience: Four years of archeological work experience that demonstrated a thorough knowledge of the fundamental principles and theories of professional archeology. The work experience must have included archeology field experience, which may include that gained in an archeological field school. Field experience should have included a combination of professional experience in archeological survey, excavation, laboratory analysis, and preparation of written materials. Applicants with such field experience should, after additional experience under the direction of a higher grade archeologist, be able to demonstrate the ability to be a crew chief, directing the work of others at a single location as a part of a larger archeological project.
