Duties

Help
  • Operate various Engineering and Heavy Mobile Equipment to include 2.5 ton truck, 1 to 1. 5 ton stake and platform truck, and 1 ton pickup truck.
  • Work to rough specifications on rugged terrain and to fine specifications from engineer stakes on flat or rolling terrain such as preparing graves or burial sections for turf.
  • Ensure that needed charts, plans, materials and tools are available, and that needed stock is obtained from supply locations.
  • Work alongside other employees and sets pace, performing non-supervisory work of the same type and level as that performed by the group led.
  • Review work throughout various stages of completion for compliance with supervisor's instructions; ensuring employees adhere to appropriate sequence, procedures, methods and deadlines.
  • Pass on instructions received from supervisor to other workers, demonstrating proper work methods and begins work.

  • Answer workers questions regarding procedures, policies, written instructions, and other directives such as technical orders.
  • Provide information to supervisor on status/progress of work, causes of delays, and overall work operations and any issues, making recommendations for additional on-the-job training requirements for individual employees as necessary.
  • Assist supervisor in preparation of administrative paperwork requirements involving labor and equipment utilization.
  • Assure that employees follow policies and procedures, including proper safety protocol. Ensures that machine capacities are not exceeded and that tools are properly used.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of an Engineering Equipment Operator Leader without more than normal supervision: Working alongside other employees to set the pace of work; operating various engineering and heavy mobile equipment to include 2.5 ton truck, 1.5 ton stake and platform truck, front-end loaders, back-hoes, graders, excavators and bulldozers; and performing duties to include rough grading, earth removal, back-filling, and clearing and cleaning operations. Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

Physical Effort:

Heavy physical effort is used by the operators in constantly reaching, bending, turning, and moving hands, arms, feet, and legs to handle different sets of controls to operate equipment of varying sizes and difficulties and their attachments. Considerable strain is caused by the constant vibration of the equipment and the jerking and jolting from operating over rough surfaces. Because of the location of some of the controls and attachments, the operators are frequently required to work in awkward or strained positions. Moderate physical effort is required in the frequent handling of objects weighing up to 50 pounds and the occasional handling of objects weighing up to 100 pounds with assistance of one person of mechanical aid while loading and unloading cargo. Periodically, incumbent must lend assistance when preparing gravesites for interment. Therefore, the incumbent must be able to lift and /or move objects (e.g., headstones, caskets) weighing up to 250 pounds with assistance from at least three other individuals.

Working Conditions:

Work is performed in all types of weather conditions while loading and unloading vehicles and when assisting the interment set-up crew. The operators are subject to cuts, bruises and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving, loading and unloading vehicles. They are subject to noise, vibration, dust, dirt, and fumes from the motor and exhaust.
