The black granite Civil Rights Memorial and adjacent exhibition center commemorate the Civil Rights Movement. Martin Luther King, Jr. preached at the Dexter Avenue Baptist Church, a hub for the Montgomery bus boycott. Close by is the domed, 1850s Alabama State Capitol. Duties

Help
  • Demonstrates proper work methods by: disinfecting restrooms to include urinals, toilet bowls, and sinks.
  • Dust, wax, and/or polish furniture and fixture and empty waste baskets.
  • Set up and tears down for special events or assemblies.
  • Adjusts and/or perform minor maintenance to attachments on power equipment.
  • Ensure needed materials and tools are available on site for workers to complete daily duties.
  • Request cleaning supplies and status updates on the process of work being completed to the Maintenance Supervisor.
  • Ensure the school is clean and ready for the next day and follow all security procedures for closing the school.

There is no specific length of training or experience required. However, you must be able to demonstrate, through experience shown in your written application materials that you possess the sufficient knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the work of this position without more than normal supervision.

Minimum Qualifications (Screen Out Element): Ability to do the work of a Custodial Worker Leader without more than normal supervision by providing guidance on cleaning, safety and housekeeping rules; independently perform full range general Janitorial duties that include sweeping, mopping, dusting and disinfecting lavatories; properly adjusting heavy powered cleaning equipment and use a variety of special cleaning and sanitizing solutions to remove stains. - Failure to meet this Screen Out Element will result in an ineligible rating.

You will be evaluated on the basis of your level of competency in the following areas:

  • Ability to Interpret Instructions, Specification, etc. (includes blueprint reading)
  • Ability To Lead or Supervise
  • Ability To Use and Maintain Tools and Equipment
  • Dexterity and Safety
  • Work Practices (includes keeping things neat, clean and in order)
  • Physical Efforts: Occasionally uses heavy powered cleaning equipment (e.g., industrial type buffers) and exerts moderately heavy physical effort such as that required in lifting and moving objects weighing up to 50 pounds, requiring continuous standing, bending, stooping and reaching . Requires working on ladders/scaffold in the performance of some duties.
  • Working Conditions: Works indoors in areas which are adequately heated, lighted, and ventilated . Exposed to vibration from heavy equipment and to skin irritation from strong cleaning solutions. Care must be taken to avoid serious injury when working on ladders and scaffolds or when using heavy powered equipment.
