Duties

Help

As an Assistant or Associate Professor in History, with emphasis on National Security and Maritime Strategy. You will be responsible for the development and delivery of educational courses and program within the department, in particular teaching courses in History and national Security Studies. You will also be responsible for academic mentoring of Midshipmen, carrying out research and scholarly activities appropriate for your position, and assuming a share of departmental and institutional service activities.

The ideal candidate will be a highly motivated professional possessing integrity, stamina, and ingenuity and be capable of adjusting to various work environments, electronic resources, and schedules.  In addition to being a subject matter expert on American security strategy and maritime security, ideal candidates will be prepared to teach all of the core/Gen Ed History courses currently in the U.S. Merchant marine Academy curriculum, including: History of Sea Power, Regional Studies, Modern American History, and National Security and Strategy, Ideal candidates collaborate well in interdisciplinary groups and are willing to serve on a wide variety of institutional committees.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.
  • TRIAL PERIOD: This is an Excepted Service position. This job will be filled by an alternative hiring process and is not in the competitive service. Applicants selected for an excepted service position may be subject to a two-year trial period.

NOTE: This is a Full-Time Faculty Tenure-Track appointment in the Excepted Service, with an initial term not-to exceed 06/28/2025.  Reappointments to additional one or two year terms are possible.  If Tenure is achieved (after four to six years), employment will be made permanent, provided a satisfactory performance appraisal is received annually.

Qualifications

Qualification standards are used to determine which applicants would be able to perform satisfactory in the position to be filled.  The education, training, experience, or other requirements included in the qualification standards are minimum requirements. i.e., it would be unlikely that an applicant for employment would be able to perform satisfactorily in a particular position or occupational series if he or she did not possess these qualifications. Applicants will be assessed based on education, evidence of teaching effectiveness, quality of scholarship, experience in the field, and demonstrated service in an academic setting.

To qualify for the Assistant/Associate Professor of History and National Security you must:

  • Hold a Doctorate from an accredited college or university in History, International Security Affairs, national Security Studies, or a closely related field issued no later than the date the job advertisement closes. 
  • No “ABD” candidates will be considered.  Academic rank (Assistant/Associate) will be determined based upon the candidate’s academic experience.

Since the U.S. Merchant Marine Academy’s curriculum includes several courses in History, all applicants’ transcripts should include graduate level coursework in History (if a Doctorate degree is not specific in History).  Applicants’ with a Doctoral degree and practical experience in the national security field or work experience and relevant linguistic ability in a region of strategic importance are also encouraged to apply.

Specialized Experience Requirements:   Your resume and application materials (including college transcripts) must show that you have the education and specialized experience necessary to teach History and/or National Security courses at the college level.

  • Four years of experience teaching at the college or university level in the field of study: national security, national strategy, international security affairs, international history, or maritime policy and strategy. Secondary fields in military history, maritime or naval history, or the history of American foreign relations/policy would also be desired.

Minimum Educational Requirement:

To qualify for the Assistant Professor of History and/or National Security you must hold a Doctorate from an accredited college or university in History, International Security Affairs, National Security Studies, or a closely related field.
