Duties

Help

The Electronics Technician will:

  • Be responsible for the preparation and maintenance of laboratory electrical and electronic equipment and controls down to the component level and of the development and implementation of a program to upgrade electrical and electronic equipment and controls used throughout the department laboratories.
  • Be assigned duties and responsibilities involving the development of technical specifications for the acquisition of any new electronic/electrical equipment and controls, including data acquisition and Programmable Logic Controllers in the department.
  • Be responsible for the maintenance reliability, precise calibration and technical operation of all electronic, electrical, and automatic control equipment and systems of the department, including the Programmable Logic Controllers.
  • Be responsible for the planning and revising of maintenance programs to ensure that there is minimum equipment and experiment down time.

This position is ideal for a highly motivated, experienced professional who will provide instruction in an electrical and electronic laboratory and be responsible for the installation, operation, safety, modification, maintenance and repair of electrical and electronic instructional equipment and communicate effectively with students, staff, supervisors, the public and others.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • DEU REQUIREMENTS: Applicants selected under delegated examining procedures may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must meet the specialized experience requirements.

To qualify for the Grade 12, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-11 it must include:

  • Experience in the installation, operation, safety, modification, maintenance and repair of new and existing marine AC/DC electrical and electronic components and systems.
  • Experience in the design, installation, programming, operation, troubleshooting, and repair of electrical/electronic control systems, including Programmable Logic Controllers.
  • Experience in the development, set-up, support, training and instruction of undergraduate electrical and electronic engineering laboratories.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

  • Program Knowledge – Knowledgeable of the requirements, capabilities, limitations, and operation of the electronic, electrical, and automatic controls systems, including the theory and programing.
  • Technical Knowledge – Develops the technical specifications for the acquisition of any new electronic/electrical equipment and controls, including data acquisition and Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC).
  • Communication – Communicates system upgrades and modifications, new equipment acquisition, installation costs, logistical and operational data related to the assigned systems.
