Duties

Help

As an Investigative Analyst at the GS-1805-5/7 grade level, some of your typical work assignments may include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Gathering, researching, and analyzing various types of data from federal, state, local and public agencies.
  • Providing administrative support and assistance to USMS Criminal Investigators in accomplishing activities for their assigned warrant cases.
  • Maintaining prisoner files and records.
  • Receiving, reviewing, coordinating, maintaining, and recording actions on criminal cases, as well as initiating documentation required to complete the enforcement of the action.
  • Reviewing cases for consistency and compliance with established civil process regulations and procedures to ensure orders of the court are followed.

Qualifications

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: To be considered minimally qualified for this position, you must demonstrate that you have the education and/or experience required for the grade level(s) to which you apply.

To qualify at the GS-5 grade level, you must meet ONE of the following:

A. General Experience: Three years progressively responsible experience, 1 year of which was equivalent to at least the GS-04 grade level, which includes 1) Assessing information and determining whether additional research or review is needed; 2) Conducting routine record and database research and analysis; 3) Preparing routing actions and reports; 4) Establishing and maintaining relationships; and 5) Utilizing Microsoft office suites to draft correspondence, record data, present information etc.

OR

B. Education:
Four-year course of study leading to a bachelor's degree.

OR

C. Combination of Education and Experience:
A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 36. Then divide your total number of completed undergraduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 120. Add the two percentages.

To qualify at the GS-7 grade level, you must meet the following:

A. Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience at the GS-05 or equivalent grade level which includes 1) Selecting, compiling, analyzing, and summarizing information; 2) Identifying facts, considering their relevance to the issue, and arranging them in a logical and clear manner; 3) Assessing information and determining whether additional research or review is needed; 4) Establishing and maintaining relationships with external organization members; and Utilizing Microsoft office suites to draft correspondence, record data, present information etc.

OR

B. Education: One full year of graduate level education in a field which demonstrates the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of the position, such as: Criminal Justice.

OR

C. Superior Academic Achievement: Successful completion of all the requirements for a bachelor's degree with Superior Academic Achievement. In order to be creditable under this provision, Superior Academic Achievement must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled. Superior Academic Achievement is based on:(1) Class Standing - Applicants must be in the upper third of the graduating class in the college, university, or major subdivision, such as the College of Liberal Arts or the School of Business Administration, based on completed courses; OR(2) Grade-Point Average (G.P.A.) - Applicants must have a grade-point average of either (a) 3.0 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B" or better) as recorded on your official transcript, or as computed based on 4 years of education, or as computed based on courses completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum; or (b) 3.5 or higher out of a possible 4.0 ("B+" or better) based on the average of the required courses completed in the major field or the required courses in the major field completed during the final 2 years of the curriculum.; OR(3) Honor Society Membership - Applicants may be considered eligible based on membership in one of the approved national scholastic honor societies listed by the Association of College Honor Societies (https://www.achsnatl.org/).

D. Combination of Education and Experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

It is your responsibility to provide documentation that you meet the education qualification(s) you claim. If you do not submit transcripts we will not use your education when determining if you are qualified for the position.

Transcripts: You may submit official or unofficial transcripts as part of the application process. If you are selected, you will be required to provide official transcripts to receive a final offer of employment. A transcript is a copy of your permanent academic record and includes:

  • The name of the college, university, or other educational institution.

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Your qualifications will be evaluated based on your application materials (e.g., resume, supporting documents), and the responses you provide on the application questionnaire. If you rate yourself higher than is supported by your application materials, your responses may be adjusted and/or you may be excluded from consideration for this job.

Your application package will be evaluated and rated under DOJ's Category Rating and Selection Procedures. Your application will then be placed in one of three categories: Best Qualified, Highly Qualified, or Qualified.

Best Qualified - applicants possessing experience that substantially exceeds the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are highly proficient in all requirements of the job and can perform effectively in the position;
Highly Qualified - applicants possessing experience that meets the minimum qualifications of the position including all selective factors, and who are proficient in some, but not all, of the requirements of the job;

Although veterans' preference points are not assigned under category rating procedures, veterans' preference eligibles are listed ahead of non-veterans within each category for which they are qualified.
