Summary

This position is located in the Communications Department (DD-COM) of the National Gallery of Art, reporting to the Chief of Communications (DD-COM Chief) which is charged with the integrated communications activities of the National Gallery. The primary purpose of DD-COM is to create and implement integrated communications plans on behalf of the National Gallery, aimed at winning broad support and public enthusiasm for the National Gallery.

Help

As the Public Affairs Specialist, you will:

  • Establish, develop, and maintain effective relationships with media representatives, providing timely, continual information on National Gallery of Art public programs.
  • Develop and carry out integrated promotion and outreach strategies for National Gallery public programs, and other activities as assigned, with the goal of increasing attendance, positive public reaction, and online engagement.

  • Research and write a variety of materials, including press releases, flyers, ads, and scripts, selects and manages images, and coordinates photo and video sessions to promote the National Gallery and the many public programs and to enable media to cover National Gallery activities.

  • Coordinate with the Chief of Communications the planning of press events and promotional activities related to assigned areas of promotion.
  • Prepare summary reports on media coverage of integrated communications plans. 
  • Prepare background information, coordinates briefing sessions, and obtains necessary audiovisual aids to assist National Gallery personnel and media representatives in producing articles broadcasts, and presentations.

  • Develop materials and assists with television and photo shoots, press coverage, and press events, for special or ongoing National Gallery activities.
  • Create and implement integrated communications plan promoting the Center for Advanced Study in the Visual Arts (the Center).
  • Manage press coverage and publicity efforts surrounding National Gallery of Art staff.

  • Work with Social Media Manager and Chief Content Strategist to broaden the awareness of scholarship and thought leadership of staff across any relevant digital platforms.

  • Establishes, develops, and implements a media training plan and program for the National Gallery of Art staff in accordance with the larger institutional strategic plan

GS-11

Specialized experience is at least one year of experience (combined), equivalent in responsibility to the GS-9 grade level in the Federal service, having establish, develop, and implement integrated communications plans to promote an organizations' many public program offerings, included but not limited to concerts, films, and lectures as well as an organizations media training program.

GS-12

Specialized experience is at least one year of experience (combined), equivalent in responsibility to the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service, having establish, develop, and implement integrated communications plans to promote an organizations' many public program offerings, included but not limited to concerts, films, and lectures as well as an organizations media training program.

Those applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be evaluated against these factors to determine the best-qualified candidates.

  1. Comprehensive knowledge applicable to a wide range of duties involving oral and written communication principles, practices, techniques and methods; analytical methods; and interpersonal relations practices and demonstrated skill sufficient to create integrated communications plans to promote a broad variety of content.

  2. Demonstrated skill in applying knowledge in the modification of standard methods and adaptation of approaches in developing new information materials aimed at enhancing the understanding of groups or individuals sufficient to develop and implement integrated communications plans to promote the National Gallery’s many public program offerings, included but not limited to concerts, films, and lectures.

  3. Comprehensive knowledge applicable to and skill in assessing public reaction and identifying extent of understanding achieved sufficient to analyze programs and identify the characteristics of target audiences; determine most effective means and distribution of information; and evaluate effectiveness of information programs.

  4. Working knowledge of print, broadcast, and digital media organizations’ procedures and programs and/or publications sufficient to explain significant issues to generally responsive groups or individuals interested in the National Gallery’s programs.

  5. Demonstrated experience using the techniques of written, electronic, and oral communication and outreach, and skill in applying these principles and techniques in developing and disseminating information and images about the National Gallery’s programs and activities to media and Web outlets and the public.
