Summary

This position is located Ottawa National Forest in with the JW Toumey Nursery in Watersmeet, Michigan.

This position serves as a professional Horticulturist at a Forest Service Nursery. The incumbent is primarilyresponsible for the coordination, planning and production of seedlings, seed, and other plant material for restoration and re-vegetation projects.

  • Serve as an interdisciplinary team member in the planning, scheduling, growing, harvesting and distribution of seedling crops and plant materials from greenhouses and bareroot production fields.
  • Monitor and adjust growing environments, observes seedling conditions, monitors for insect and disease.
  • Takes necessary corrective measures including the application of pesticides in a greenhouse environment.
  • Establish and communicate guidelines and performance requirements to employees including conducting formal performance reviews and identifying developmental and training needs of employees.

  • Perform administrative and human resources management functions for the unit such as providing advice, counsel or instruction on both administrative and work matters.
  • Prepare work plans and production schedules, coordinates activities with other departments, and monitors and protects of crops.
  • Assist with field preparation, seed stratification schedules, seed sowing, irrigation, insect and disease monitoring.

Qualifications

Basic Requirement:
For the GS-0437 series:
Degree: Successful completion of a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a Bachelor's or higher degree that included a major field of study in horticulture; or a related discipline of basic plant science that included at least 30 semester hours in the basic plant sciences, of which at least 16 semester hours were in horticultural subjects such as those dealing with the breeding, care, management, production, and post-harvest handling of horticultural crops.
OR
Combination of education and experience -- courses equivalent to a major in horticulture or a related discipline of basic plant science that included course work as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

Evaluation of Education: Courses in botany, plant physiology, plant taxonomy, plant pathology, genetics, agronomy, horticulture, and similar courses may be used to meet the 30-semester-hour requirement in basic plant sciences.

The 16-semester-hour requirement in horticulture includes course work in basic horticulture and course work related to any of the recognized subject-matter fields of horticulture, i.e., fruits, vegetables, ornamentals, nursery work, seed production, or course work in related areas of science, such as micro-biology, entomology, plant pathology, plant physiology, or genetics that is directly related to horticultural work.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.

Specialized Experience Requirement:
For the GS-09: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level. Examples of specialized experience may include three or more of the following: Serve as an interdisciplinary team member in the planning, scheduling, growing, harvesting and distribution of seedling crops and plant materials from greenhouses and bareroot production fields. Prepare work plans and production schedules, coordinates activities with other departments, and monitors and protects of crops. Monitor and adjust growing environments, observes seedling conditions, monitors for insect and disease. Assist with field preparation, seed stratification schedules, seed sowing, irrigation, insect and disease monitoring. Review work accomplishments for assigned areas of responsibility and compiles necessary reports. Takes necessary corrective measures including the application of pesticides in a greenhouse environment.

For the GS-11 Level: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 grade level. Examples of specialized experience may include: Three or more of the following: Direct and supervise bareroot seedling order packing, storage, and shipping operations to ensure plant quality is maintained and maximize the accuracy of each order shipped.Oversee monitoring of bareroot seedlings to determine the presence of plant diseases, weeds, and insect pests. Participate with the Nursery Manager in the formulation of nursery plans, policies and programs. Develop and implement programs to detect, prevent and control nursery pests and diseases. Prescribe mechanical and chemical treatments in the implementation of the nursery Integrated Pest Management program. Conduct mandated pesticide training for nursery personnel including worker protection, application and safety training. Draft training guidelines and operating manuals for all major nursery activities and conducts training sessions for new employees.

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment.
