Summary

As a Research Computer Scientist / Research AST, Data Analysis with the Science and Technology Office, Science Research and Projects Division, and Earth Science Branch, you will manage the Global Hydrometeorology Research Center (GHRC), one of the NASA Earth Observing System Data and Information System (EOSDIS) Distributed Active Archive Centers (DAACs). You will implement techniques for current and future data holdings, services, and user engagement supporting their broad user community.

Duties

Help
  • Leads, manages, and coordinates an interdisciplinary team in archiving/disseminating global data sets/products from remotely sensed and in situ measurements systems to the scientific community furthering scientific research goals in Earth Science.
  • Applies mathematics, numerical analysis, data analysis, computational methods, data mining, machine learning, and other computer science techniques to solve complex problems related to accessing, storing and processing Earth Science data products.
  • Improves the usability of Earth Science data products by the research community.
  • Conducts conceptual definition studies and establishes preliminary applications to achieve definable and desired results for a variety of advanced data systems.
  • Interprets broad guidelines and develops new and improved hypotheses, concepts, or approaches for data mining and machine learning; and/or in developing new policies that have the potential to take data archiving and dissemination in new directions.
  • Works with all levels of management and program officials, key personnel of other Agency/government agency locations, and private industry to resolve and track complex controversial problems that arise and assures the overall resolution of issues.
  • Integrates research and analysis results into comprehensive technical briefings, reports, and peer-reviewed technical papers.
  • Uses the competitive proposal process to acquire resources and project activities internal and external to NASA and aligned with Marshall Space Flight Center (MSFC's) Earth Science mission.
  • As an agency expert, provides service to the scientific/technical communities through participation on, review panels, teams, and committees of considerable importance and consequence to NASA and MSFC, both internal and external to the organization.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for GS-14, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-13 level:

  • Supporting and/or leading interdisciplinary teams in the collection, archival, dissemination, and use of NASA, other partner, and/or commercial remote sensing imagery;
  • Communicating research results and participating in the Earth Science community through a record of peer-reviewed publications, conference presentations, and competitively awarded, or directed research and development activities;
  • Development and implementation of new procedures, methods, or policies that have impacted end user communities of remote sensing data.

Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
