Duties

Help

As the Director, the incumbent will:

  • Be responsible for planning, directing, and coordinating an extensive program to upgrade and modernize public health microbiology in the US public health system by taking advantage of the rapidly evolving field of "next generation" or advanced molecular methods in genomics, proteomics, and other molecular analytic approaches for pathogen identification and characterization.
  • Set scientific and technological priorities for the program and oversees intramural and extramural initiatives to support innovation.
  • Provide leadership and expertise in the development and execution of research projects, ensuring scientific soundness and technical feasibility.
  • Leverage AMD technologies to detect emerging antibiotic resistance, identify global resistance threats, and prevent the spread of resistance in the U.S.
  • Collaborate with other CDC programs to facilitate development and pilot testing of next-generation diagnostic tests and protocols.
  • Provide workforce training at CDC and in state and local public health laboratories across the nation.

Qualifications

Current federal employees must be at or equivalent to the GS-14 grade level or above to be considered for this position.

Basic Qualifications for RS-0601: Applicants must possess a degree with a major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education (external link) at the time the degree was obtained.

In addition to the basic qualifications requirement, applicants must have earned a doctoral level degree in biomedicine or a biological related field, or a doctoral or master's level degree in engineering, bioinformatics, or a related or emerging field.

Candidates must show clear evidence of specialized experience.

Specialized experience is that which is directly related to the position and which has equipped the applicant with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSAs) to successfully perform the duties of the position, such as managing, directing, coordinating, and overseeing applied biomedical research and implementation of laboratory or epidemiologic analyses, particularly molecular epidemiologic analyses in infectious diseases programs and outbreaks including molecular characterization and phylogenetic analyses of pathogens which integrate laboratory and epidemiologic data to effectively achieve public health impact.

Typically, experience of this nature is gained at or above the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service or its equivalent with state or local government, the private sector, or nongovernmental organizations.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

Additional information

The senior scientist level compensation package is commensurate with qualifications and experience and may result in a higher salary than reflected above. This position is located in the Office of Advanced Molecular Detection (OAMD), National Center for Emerging and Zoonotic Infectious Diseases (NCEZID), within the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, in Atlanta, Georgia.
