Summary

Serves as an Aerospace Engineer in the Space Mission Analysis Branch (SMAB, https://sacd.larc.nasa.gov/smab/) of the Systems Analysis and Concepts Directorate (SACD), providing systems analysis support to inform decision-making across the Agency's space portfolios. Analysis ranges from conceptual to flight project support and from modeling of systems to multi-decadal campaigns. Products used to enable Agency decision-makers to make informed technical, programmatic and budgetary decisions.

  • Duties described below are at the full-performance level. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.
  • Leads and/or supports activities as part of a team to deliver on products: developing work plans, overseeing and managing execution, and providing technical review of products.
  • Supports interactions with customers to identify, understand, and define expectations in terms of products, resources, and schedule; then supports delivery to those expectations.
  • Supports systems analysis business development efforts, including development/execution of capture plans and crafting of advocacy materials.
  • Conducts design, sizing, analysis, and assessments of space systems, missions, architectures, and campaigns, inclusive of benefit, cost, schedule, and risk factors. Applies knowledge of orbital and flight mechanics.
  • Defines and develops math models of space systems, architectures, campaigns, and portfolios to explore, analyze, and assess the design space.
  • Elicits and integrates knowledge from subject matter experts and decision-makers to inform analysis and assessment activities through the use of open, transparent, and structured methods.
  • Conducts performance and technology assessments of missions and architectures for capability baselines, options for capability evolution, and gaps between current state of the art and required capabilities.
  • Supports establishment and management of contracts, including establishment of contracts/tasks/agreements, monitoring of on-site/off-site work, and evaluation of contractor performance.

Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Education Requirement (in the Education section below), to qualify for this position you must meet the requirements below and have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for GS-12, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-11 level in the federal sector:

  • Performing aerospace architecture/mission/vehicle design and analysis, or trade studies and sensitivity analysis, or assessments of aerospace mission capabilities, and/or gap analyses between current state of the art and required capabilities; and
  • Conducting engineering analyses and/or assessments, computational and statistical techniques for modeling, and analysis of results from those models.
To qualify for GS-13, you must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12 level in the federal sector:
  • Independently performing aerospace architecture/mission/vehicle design and analysis, or trade studies and sensitivity analysis, or assessments of aerospace mission capabilities, and/or gap analyses between current state of the art and required capabilities; and
  • Conducting engineering analyses and/or assessments, computational and statistical techniques for modeling, and analyzing results from models; and
  • Briefing or preparing reports of results to customers.

Education

Basic Education Requirement: You must have successfully completed a bachelor's degree with a major in one of the following:
a) Engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs
b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science or other field of Science
c) Computer Science that included 30 semester hours or 45 quarter hours of course work in any combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science with at least half of those hours in mathematics and statistics courses that included differential and integral calculus.

If you did not complete a qualifying bachelor's degree, you may be eligible if you have obtained a graduate degree in an AST qualifying field, as listed above.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered qualifying for this position.
