Summary

This position is with the Agroecosystem Management Research Unit (AMRU) of ARS in Lincoln, NE. The focus of this position is to use a bioinformatic approach to better understand the role of organic (manure) and inorganic fertilizers in nutrient cycling, carbon sequestration and building healthy soils.

Duties

Help
  • Collaborate with unit scientists and among research programs in the development and implementation of protocols, bioinformatics and statistical solutions for analyzing and interpreting genomics, metagenomics, and big data for unit projects;
  • Participate in the development of computational and bioinformatics-based solutions for analyzing and interpreting microbial datasets in the context of systems-level agronomic production settings;
  • Use computational, bioinformatics and experimental methods to understand the the ecology of microorganisms and mobile genetic elements, environmental antibiotic resistance, and nutrient cycling in agricultural systems;
  • Use computer software, algorithms, and approaches to perform bioinformatics analyses for experimental procedures, techniques, and data formats.

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet the education requirement and defined under EDUCATION as well as the specialized experience listed below.

Specialized Experience
: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

GS-12: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. The specialized experience requirements for this position include:

  • Experience utilizing foundational principles, theories and practices of bioinformatics, computational biology;
  • Experience applying principles and mechanisms of molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, biochemistry and/or agronomy to plan and execute research in ecology of microorganisms and mobile genetic elements, environmental antibiotic resistance and nutrient cycling in agricultural systems;
  • Experience using computer software, algorithms, and approaches to perform bioinformatics analyses for experimental procedures, techniques, and data formats;
  • Experience providing information and technical support; documenting activities and research results; and expressing ideas and facts to individuals and/or groups effectively.
GS-13: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. The specialized experience requirements for this position include:
  • Experience utilizing principles, theories and practices of bioinformatics, computational biology,
  • Experience applying principles and mechanisms of molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, biochemistry and/or agronomy to plan and execute research in ecology of microorganisms and mobile genetic elements, environmental antibiotic resistance and nutrient cycling in agricultural systems;
  • Experience assessing the validity and appropriateness of computational and bioinformatics tools, and recommending improvements
  • Experience providing information and technical support; document activities and research results; and express ideas and facts to individuals and/or groups effectively.
GS-14: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 grade level in the Federal service. The specialized experience requirements for this position include:
  • Experience representing a unit or organization on assigned areas of research and responsibility, and serves as an independent advisor for projects that aim to address the needs of researchers and information management projects,
  • Experience overseeing application of principles and mechanisms of molecular biology, microbiology, genetics, biochemistry and/or agronomy to plan and execute research in ecology of microorganisms and mobile genetic elements, environmental antibiotic resistance and nutrient cycling in agricultural systems;
  • Experience collaborating with other computational biologist and scientists to develop and standardize methods for recording and collecting microbial phenotypic and genotypic data;
  • Experience providing information and technical support; documenting activities and research results; and expressing ideas and facts to individuals and/or groups effectively.

Basic Requirements

Biologist 0401 - Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position. Or Combination of education and experience: Courses equivalent to a major, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
