Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Discovery Station Program Manager - Manages the upkeep of 30+ Discovery Stations, including ensuring stations are stocked with all necessary items and are in working order so that they can be successfully presented to visitors.
  • Production Coordinator for Education - Produces media content for visitors, for presentation both virtually and in the physical museum.
  • Education Material Development - Develops training and support materials in collaboration with NASM stakeholders like educators, curators and docent coordinators in order to assist Discovery Station facilitators in learning about and successfully facilitating the Stations.

Basic Requirements:

  1. Degree: that included or was supplemented by major study in education or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position.

    or

  2. Combination of education and experience - courses equivalent to a major in education, or in a subject-matter field appropriate to the position, plus appropriate experience or additional course work that provided knowledge comparable to that normally acquired through the successful completion of the 4-year course of study described in 1 above.

In addition to the Basic Requirements above you must have the following:

Experience: You qualify for this position if you have one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-09 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position Specialized experience is defined as: Managing programs that include budgets associated to the program, equipment maintenance and training; video production experience including videography, editing, live location directing, technical direction, archiving and infrastructure management; and collaborating with others in developing educational materials.  

OR; 

PhD. or equivalent doctoral degree, or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree;

OR;

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Education

Education can be used to substitute specialized experience for this position at the GS-11 level.  At the GS-11 level applicant can substitute one year of specialized experience with a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; OR; 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree; OR; Equivalent combinations of education and experience.

Additional information

This position is included in the bargaining unit.  It also requires weekend, holiday and evening work on a recurring basis.

  5. Writing – Ability to recognize or use correct English grammar, punctuation, and spelling; communicate information (for example, facts, ideas, or messages) in a succinct and organized manner; produce written information, which may include technical material, that is appropriate for the intended audience.

Applicants who meet or exceed minimum qualifications will be assigned to one of three category groups based on job-related criteria:

  • Best Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and excels in most of the job related competencies above.
  • Better Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements and satisfies most of the job related competencies above.
  • Good Category - Meets the minimum qualification requirements, but does not satisfy most of the job related competencies above to a substantive degree.

This category rating process does not add veterans' preference points or apply the "rule of three", but protects the rights of veterans by placing them ahead of non-preference eligibles within each category. A selecting official may make selections from the highest quality category (Best Category) provided no preference eligible in that category is passed over to select a non-preference eligible in that category unless the requirements of 5 U.S.C. 3317(b) or 3318(b) are satisfied. Preference eligibles who meet minimum qualification requirements and who have a compensable service-connected disability of at least 10 percent must be listed in the highest quality category, except when the position being filled is scientific or professional at the GS-9 grade level or higher.
