Help

The Office of Inspector General (OIG) is an independent office within the SEC that conducts, supervises, and coordinates audits and investigations of the programs and operations of the SEC. The mission of the OIG is to prevent and detect fraud, waste, and abuse and to promote integrity, economy, efficiency, and effectiveness in the Commission's programs and operations.

The Inspector General is the principal advisor to the Commission on the above matters and is responsible for keeping the Commission fully and currently informed about problems and deficiencies relating to the administration of the Commission's programs and operations and the necessity for corrective action.

Typical duties include:

  • Providing policy direction for, and conducting, supervising and coordinating audits and investigations relating to the programs and operations of the SEC;
  • Reviewing existing and proposed legislation and regulations relating to the SEC programs and operations and making recommendations in the semiannual reports required by section 5(a) of the Inspector General Act of 1978 (IG Act), concerning the impact of such legislation or regulations on the economy and efficiency in the administration of programs and operations of the agency, or the prevention and detection of fraud and abuse in its programs and operations;
  • Recommending policies for, and conducting, supervising or coordinating other activities carried out by the SEC for the purpose of promoting economy and efficiency in the administration of, or preventing and detecting fraud and abuse in, its programs and operations;
  • Recommending policies for, and conducting, supervising or coordinating relationships between the SEC and other federal agencies, state and local governmental agencies, and nongovernmental entities with respect to all matters relating to the promotion of economy and efficiency in the administration of, or the prevention and detection of fraud and abuse in, programs and operations of the SEC or the identification and prosecution of participants in such fraud or abuse;
  • Keeping the Commission and the Congress fully and currently informed, by means of the reports required by section 5 of the IG Act and otherwise, concerning fraud and other serious problems, abuses and deficiencies relating to the administration of the programs and operations of the agency, recommending corrective action concerning such problems, abuses and deficiencies, and reporting on the progress made in implementing such corrective action;
  • Providing practicable, actionable recommendations to the SEC on how to improve the economy and efficiency of its operations and programs;
  • Identifying best practices being used in the government that can be adopted by the SEC;
  • Serving as a resource for SEC officials as they undertake enterprise risk -management, and promoting and supporting strategic innovation;
  • Providing a long-term perspective on what has gone on in their agency given that they typically remain in place through presidential transitions and changes in agency leadership;
  • Alerting new Commissioners to the key risks and challenges facing the SEC.

  • DIRECT DEPOSIT: All Federal employees are required to have Federal salary payments made by direct deposit to a financial institution of their choosing.
  • This position is not in the collective bargaining unit.
  • For consideration at the SO-2 level, you must currently hold a SO-2 position within the SEC.
  • Due to COVID-19, the SEC is currently in an optional telework posture. This position is eligible to request telework in accordance with the SEC 's telework policy.

Qualifying experience may be obtained in the private or public sector. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENT:
SO-01: Applicant must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS/SK-14 level:

  1. Managing or overseeing organization-wide, evaluations, audits, or investigations of policies, programs, operations and activities to determine economy, efficiency, effectiveness, or compliance; and
  2. Providing far-reaching and high-impact recommendations and reports to key senior-level stakeholders to improve organizational economy and efficiency and prevent fraud, waste, and abuse.

SEC COMPENSATION PROGRAM: The overall salary range listed above is provided for informational purposes as it represents the full range that is applicable to current employees in this occupation/grade; however, a selectee's initial pay is always set below the maximum rate of the range.   2. Experience leading a risk assessment and management program for a large, multifaceted organization.
  3. Experience in leading and managing audits and investigations relating to the programs and operations of the establishments listed in section 12 of the Inspector General Act of 1978, as amended.
