Duties

Help

NIGMS-funded scientists investigate how living systems work at a range of levels, from individual molecules and cells to tissues, organs, research organisms, humans, and whole populations. Additionally, to ensure the vitality and continued productivity of the research enterprise, NIGMS provides leadership in training the next generation of scientists, in enhancing the diversity of the scientific workforce, and in developing research capacity throughout the country.

A Health Scientist (Data Science) will be expected to perform the following duties:

  • Identify strategies and implement approaches to understand and respond to the evolving research data needs of NIGMS programs, including leading and developing special projects of interest across NIH and HHS.
  • Apply analytical, machine learning, visualization and reporting tools to data sets in order to further scientific understanding and derive knowledge from data.
  • Serve as a member of committees or work groups at the agency or department level as well as on interdepartmental groups. In this capacity, the incumbent provides professional expertise as well as representing NIGMS on matters relating to policy and interpretation of resource requirements for data science and health research.
  • Evaluate program initiatives to determine whether strategic goals are being accomplished and implement course correction when appropriate.
  • Leads applied data science and health research strategies to optimize data for evidence-based management of NIGMS scientific training, scientific workforce development, and scientific diversity programs. Integrate scientific training data to the Institute-wide analytical dashboard.
  • Communicate new data science findings with the greater scientific community through publications in scientific and peer-reviewed journals as well as paper and poster presentations in conferences
  • Develops and leads collaborations across HHS, NIH, and other organizations to align NIGMS data-driven activities and health research with external efforts to improve methods and approaches for optimizing utilization of data. Represents NIGMS on appropriate HHS, NIH, interagency committees, working groups, and conferences in developing, recommending and implementing data science methods and tools. Identifies strategies and implementation approaches to understand and respond to the evolving research data needs of NIGMS staff.

Qualifications

In order to qualify for a Health Scientist (Data Science), GS-0601-14, position you must have successfully completed a full 4-year course of study in an accredited college or university leading to a Bachelor's degree or graduate/higher level degree with major study in an academic field related to the medical field, health sciences or allied sciences appropriate to the work of the position. (This degree must be from an educational program from an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained).

In addition, to qualify for an Health Scientist (Data Science), position at the GS-14 level, you must possess at least one year of qualifying experience equivalent to at least the GS-13 level in the Federal service obtained in either the private or public sector, which includes developing organizational data-related strategies and procedures by partnering with the relevant stakeholders (e.g., researchers, leadership); providing oversight and guidance on the implementation and integration of state-of-the-art technologies and solutions for a scientific or health research organization; supporting scientific data and knowledge management systems by providing guidance on administration and management functions; providing guidance on creating and modifying scientific applications using programming languages (e.g., R, Python, SQL, Scala, Java, C/C++, Julia); presenting findings to senior-level leadership through data visualization techniques using programming or software packages.
