Duties

Help

As an Archivist, you will:

  • Record appraisal and description.
  • Record arrangement, preservation, and conservation.
  • Provide archive and records management.
  • Communicate with people verbally and in writing both inside and outside of the library.
  • Have the ability to walk, stand, bend, and carry up to 35 pounds.

The ideal candidate would perform accessioning, arrangement, description, rehousing and basic preservation of archival and manuscript collections documenting the United States Merchant Marine Academy. The ideal candidate recognizes the need and value of preserving archival materials and collections and possesses proper handling and preservation knowledge. Candidates would have a minimum of three-years’ professional experience processing archival collections in an academic library, museum, or other archival research center and be enrolled in a graduate program in library science, archival studies, museum studies, or public history, or hold a archives-focused degree in one of these fields. The candidate should have the ability to go up and down multiple flights of stairs every work day. A Certification with the Academy of Certified Archivists and/or the ability to move library materials up to 35 pounds is preferred.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • DEU REQUIREMENTS: Applicants selected under delegated examining procedures may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).

Qualifications

To meet the minimum qualifications for this position, you must (1) meet the Education Requirement for the series, (2) provide a copy of transcripts for verification, AND/OR (3) meet the specialized experience requirements. 

To qualify for the GS-11 on Experience, you must have at least one year of experience equal or equivalent to the GS-09 it must include:

  • Experience with archives and archives management and the principles, concepts, and techniques of archival work.
  • Experience working with databases and/or library catalogs.
  • Experience with the maritime industry, American history, culture, documentary studies, oral history and research sources to process and describe archival collections.
  • Experience in drafting an archival collection policy and finding aids.

To qualify for the GS-11 on Education alone, you must have:

  • 3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree.

You can also qualify based on a combination of higher level graduate education and experience. This must be fully supported by your resume and transcripts, provided with your application.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (KSAs): Your qualifications will be evaluated on the basis of your level of knowledge, skills, abilities and/or competencies in the following areas:

  • Program Knowledge- The knowledge and understanding of records preservation and archival holdings to successfully identify, analyze, and recommend improvements and solutions to administrative and procedural problems in archival management.
  • Technical Knowledge- The knowledge of records preservation theories and techniques sufficient to ensure technological advancements that are compatible with the Academy's archival architecture. Skilled in the use of computer based automated systems used to control the holdings sufficient to secure vital records.
  • Communication-- Ability to communicate orally and in writing to staff, supervisors, federal agencies, the public, and others.

Education

  1. Bachelor's degree in archival science or bachelor's degree with a major that includes 18 semester hours in archival science, history and/or in political science or government, and 12 semester hours in one or any combination of the following: archival science, history, American civilization, economics, political science, public administration, or government. OR

  2. Combination of education and experience - at least 30 semester hours that included courses as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
