Summary

This position is located in Region 5 Forest Service unit on the Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit, Watershed Management Staff, South Lake Tahoe, CA.

The incumbent has responsibility for providing professional, scientific assistance to the staff pertaining to a variety of botanical and sensitive plant species duties in support of Forest activities.

Duties

Help
  • Perform supervisory duties up to 20% of the time.
  • Identify vegetation communities and conduct vegetation inventories using basic botanical methods and techniques.
  • Maintain plant surveys and monitoring records in appropriate data base files, in addition to collection and preparation of voucher specimens for plants.
  • Conduct environmental data collection field surveys and maintain inventory of plant occurrence records.
  • Conduct training in habitat analysis, plant identification, and documentation in accordance with management plans and objectives.
  • Provide professional advice and guidance on botanical issues to colleagues and management.
  • Prepare informational responses to group and individual inquiries.
  • Implement management plans for the protection and enhancement of habitat for special status plants and control of noxious weeds or other invasive species.
  • Participate on interdisciplinary teams to coordinate the effective management of threatened, endangered and sensitive plant species.
  • Manage invasive species and native plant community restoration projects.
  • Develop or assist with developing sensitive plant lists and species management guidelines.
  • Assist in preparing assessments and management plans for the protection and enhancement of habitat for special status plants.
  • Prepare reports on population trend and community composition monitoring data for use in plant projects.
  • Plan the work to be accomplished by the unit to establish production or quality standards.
  • Identify developmental and training needs of employees.
  • Establish guidelines and performance requirements to employees.
  • Demonstrate a commitment to fostering and promoting an equitable, inclusive, and safe work environment.
  • Serve as a botanist with staff responsibilities for developing, evaluating, and monitoring threatened, endangered and sensitive plant species, plant community and vegetation management.

Qualifications

Basic Requirements:

  1. Degree: botany or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany.
OR
  1. Combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in botany or basic plant science that included at least 24 semester hours in botany, as shown above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

In addition to meeting the basic requirement, you must also possess experience and/or directly related education in the amounts listed below.

Specialized Experience Requirement:

For the GS-09: One-year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-07 grade level. Examples include: As an advanced trainee, participated in the evaluation and monitoring of the threatened, endangered and sensitive plant species and plant community and vegetation management programs; Located, surveyed, identified and recorded threatened, endangered and sensitive plant species information in order to meet environmental assessment requirements; Collected and summarized data and administered plant species projects.

OR 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree

OR an appropriate combination of specialized experience and education (only graduate education in excess of 18 semester hours may be used to qualify applicants for this grade level). The education must have been obtained in an accredited college or university and demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
