Help

The Maintenance Mechanic:

  • Will work alone or as part of a team. Troubleshoot equipment to determine the area of difficulty; what parts or material are required; methods, techniques, and procedures to use in completing repairs.
  • Must have the skill to identify and repair the full range of problems that may occur within the grounds of the Academy.  Duties include resetting of circuit breakers, clearing plumbing stoppages, repairing fans and ventilation systems, repairing desks, chairs, storage lockers, filing cabinets, locks and beds.
  • Will provide a full-time preventative maintenance program, and be responsible for most repairs that can be accomplished.
  • Must be able to read and layout work from blueprints, sketches, schematics, technical manuals, drawings and specifications and other materials to determine the characteristics and repair of the equipment.
  • Must have the skill to identify and repair the full range of problems that may occur within the grounds of the Academy. 
  • Must be skilled in the use of all hand and power tools and equipment common to the trades.
  • Will troubleshoot equipment to determine the area of difficulty; what parts or material are required; and the methods, techniques, and procedures to use in completing repairs.

This position is ideal for a highly motived, experienced maintenance mechanic in the maintenance and repair of grounds, exterior structures, buildings and related fixtures and utilities using a variety of trade practices especially in the mechanical and plumbing trades.

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  • SELECTIVE SERVICE: Males born after 12/31/1959 must be registered for the Selective Service.
  • PHYSICAL EFFORTS:  You must go in and out of difficult and out of the way places such as attics, sub-basements, tank rooms and steam tunnels which require much walking, kneeling, stooping,  lifting, crawling and  ladder climbing. Incumbent frequently handles objects weighing 20 kilograms (45) pounds and occasionally carries objects weighing 223 kilogram (50) pounds or more over considerable distances. You must be able to crawl through and into crawl spaces and tunnels to inspect underground foundations. Have no fear of heights since assignments require climbing up long ladders to inspect roofs, steel framing, Mariner's Chapel steeple, and other high points of Academy's structures. During low tide, you will inspect under piers wearing boots and coveralls, and during heavy rain or wind storms, must be able to inspect flooded areas for damaged utilities. The work requires frequent standing, bending, stooping, crouching, and repetitive arm movement over and under machinery of all types for sustained periods of time.
  • WORKING CONDITIONS: You will be subject to the hazards of the electrical, carpentry, plumbing and mechanical trades which require work to be done in such places as steam tunnels, sub-basements, attics, tight spaces and roofs. You may be subject to radiation exposure, burns, fumes, gases and working in isolated areas in the course of his/her assigned tasks. There is a danger of falling from ladders or scaffolds, from tools dropped by subordinates, and possible eye or hand injuries while operating power equipment. You may be required to be present and assist in various Academy emergencies such as snow storms, ice storms, hurricanes or heavy winds where damage has occurred to buildings, piers, utilities and other Academy facilities.
  • PROBATIONARY PERIOD: You must complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).
  • DEU REQUIREMENTS: Applicants selected under delegated examining procedures may be required to successfully complete a one-year probationary period (unless already completed).

Qualifications

Qualifications for the position are based on the  training, experience, or other requirements that determine which applicants would be able to perform satisfactorily in the position to be filled.

To qualify for the WG-10, your experience should include experience equal or equivalent to the following:

  • Experience at the journey level proficiency in the mechanical, and plumbing trades.
