Duties

Help
  • Assesses incoming seeds that are major U.S. crops to be preserved for indications of low quality (e.g., mechanical damage or presence of pathogens, contaminating seeds/noxious weeds, or chemical seed treatments);
  • Performs selected phases of experimentation and curation for seeds by performing technical laboratory duties which may include obtaining seed mass data, imaging seeds, and measuring seed water content and associated relative humidity and temperature;
  • In a laboratory setting maintains, calibrates and adjusts general seed-testing equipment (e.g., incubators, pipettors, pH meters, balances, microscopes); and assists with work using specialized equipment (seed counters and cleaners);
  • Keeps detailed records of experimental and curation data in the Germplasm Resources Information Network (GRIN-Global) database or other required data repositories.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.

Specialized Experience: Specialized experience is experience directly related to the position to be filled. Specialized experience must be described for each grade level advertised. The specialized experience requirements for this position are:

GS-06: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-05 grade level in the Federal service. The specialized experience requirements for this position include:

  • Conducts laboratory germination tests of crop species of incoming seed samples and monitor tests of stored samples using species-specific procedures;
  • Use knowledge of seed morphology and physiology to identify crop and wild seeds;
  • Use laboratory instrumentation to test, prepare, and store seeds for preservation;
  • Calibrate and synchronize laboratory equipment to assess seed quality and achieve desired results;
  • Prepare and maintain records of data obtained from assessments
OR 1 year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position

GS-07: Applicants must demonstrate at least one full year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position include:
  • Conducts laboratory germination tests of crop species of incoming seed samples and monitor tests of stored samples using species-specific procedures;
  • Use knowledge of seed morphology and physiology to identify crop and wild seeds;
  • Use laboratory instrumentation to test, prepare, and store seeds for preservation;
  • Calibrate and synchronize laboratory equipment to assess seed quality and achieve desired results;
  • Prepare and maintain records of data obtained from assessments;
  • Performs seed dissection to assess presence of embryonic axis and tetrazolium testing;
  • Uses microculture techniques to germinate excised embryos;
  • Explore new techniques to test seed viability.
OR 1 year of graduate education directly related to the work of the position

Volunteer work helps build critical competencies and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Education

There is no basic education requirement though coursework in botany would be beneficial

You will be evaluated for this job based on how well you meet the qualifications above.

Applicants who meet basic minimum qualifications will be placed in one of two or three categories: Best Qualified, Well Qualified, or Qualified. Within these categories, applicants eligible for veteran's preference will receive selection priority over non-veterans. Category placement will be determined based on applicants' quality of experience and the extent they possess the following knowledge, skills, and abilities (KSA) or competencies:
