This position is located at the National Veterinary Services Laboratories (NVSL) in Ames, Iowa. Contributes to rapid and accurate detection and identification of known pathogens and possesses understanding of good laboratory practices.
Performs serological and chemical techniques for the detection of antibodies and antigens per detailed official Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).
Contributes to proficiency test production, sample or kit evaluation, and additional proficiency test production and administration duties.
Characterizes pathogens by phenotype, genotype, and virulence by selecting the appropriate physical, chemical, and biologic tests including animal inoculation. Evaluates findings and determines correct serotype or pathotype.
Under the direction of senior scientists, assists with method validation, for the diagnosis of animal diseases for which standard methods are not described in the literature.
Contributes to review and approval of cases within the laboratory information management system and consistent with quality management guidelines to release reports in a timely manner.

Testing Designated Position: Selectee must submit to a urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment and random testing thereafter. Final appointment and continued employment is conditional on negative results for illegal drug use.
Periodically, the diagnostic workload during a disease outbreak may require considerable overtime.
Regular duties may involve mandatory participation in rotating overtime work schedules, and import/export or other time-sensitive testing may be required in the evenings, on weekends, and holidays.
Position requires work in biocontainment and/or hazardous areas and must shower in and out of biocontainment areas one or more times per day, following the proper procedures.
Immunization against diseases being studied which are transmissible to humans may be required.

Qualifications
Applicants must meet all qualifications and eligibility requirements by the closing date of the announcement, including specialized experience and/or education, as defined below.
BASIC REQUIREMENT: Degree: biological sciences, agriculture, natural resource management, chemistry, or related disciplines appropriate to the position;
OR
Combination of education and experience: post high school education with courses equivalent to a major, which is defined as 24 semester/36 quarter hours, in the biological sciences, agriculture, natural resources management, chemistry or related disciplines appropriate to the position, PLUS appropriate experience or additional course work. The quality of the combination must demonstrate that you possess the knowledge, skills, and abilities required to perform the work of the position and is comparable to that normally acquired through the completion of a full four-year course of study with a major as described above.
FOR THE GS-09 LEVEL: Applicants must have one year of specialized experience (equivalent to the GS-07 level) that may have been obtained in the private or public (local, county, state, Federal) sectors which demonstrates:
Working in an ISO or GLP laboratory setting demonstrating experience with quality management and good laboratory practices
Independently performing a range of non-routine, specialized tests for which standard methods and techniques exist
Monitoring a range of non-routine, standardized tests
Identifying and solving issues on an independent basis while referring novel or unusual circumstances for assistance as appropriate
OR 2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or or master's or equivalent degree in Biology, Microbiology, Molecular Biology, General Chemistry, Organic Chemistry, or a closely related field.
