Duties

Help
  • Patrol recreation sites and campgrounds along with recreational trails ensuring compliance with rules and regulations. Perform labor duties to maintain recreation and campsites along with recreational trails.
  • Operate snowmobiles, breaking 250 miles of winter trails, pulling 300 pound trail groomers and sleds full of gear with snowmobiles.
  • Maintain 14 public recreation cabins, replacing signage, bridge repairs and inspections, plowing and maintaining trailheads.
  • Advise visitors concerning safety, fire prevention, and proper use of recreational facilities. Work with public land users on proposed projects to facilitate multiple use of the lands.
  • Interpret and implement Bureau program policy, standards and guidelines related to outdoor recreation and wilderness program and procedures.

Qualifications

You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-05 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples:

  • Deal with people of differing backgrounds and behavioral patterns.
  • Analyze and evaluate outdoor recreation interests, habits, and needs of diversified groups, and the means for meeting those needs.
  • Evaluate land or water areas for their recreation and related potential use, such as wildlife reserve.
  • Prepare or review plans and programs for natural resource utilization and recreation area development.
  • Solve administrative, intergovernmental, socioeconomic, and other problems involved in providing adequate recreation opportunities while preserving, restoring, and enhancing the quality of the outdoor environment.

Education: possess one full year of graduate study in one of the following fields: outdoor recreation planning or a related field such as: sociology, forestry, landscape architecture, economics, biological science, park administration, earth science, natural resource management and conservation, civil engineering, urban planning, or recreation.

Combination of Education and Experience: You may meet qualifications requirement for this position with an equivalent combination of specialized experience and appropriate graduate education. Graduate level education must demonstrate the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to do the work of this position.

Superior Academic Achievement (See OPM's General Policies, Application of Qualification Standards Section 4.f.) S.A.A. must have been gained in a curriculum that is qualifying for the position to be filled.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Work Environment: You will be required to visit field sites where risks may include exposure to a variety of weather conditions particularly extreme winter conditions for prolonged periods, and potential injury from falls, strains, bites, stings, etc.
